  1. Which brand of truck do you think is best and why (between 1965-1980)? I have a 1969 ford f-250 and I love it despite it's quirks. But some people I know swear by Chevy's. There seems to be either Chevy truck people or Ford truck people (and the occasional Dodge truck people).

  4. Thanks Ray and Jim. One cold crank amp per cubic inch of displacement is a great rule of thumb that I will remember. I will go to the battery store and order one up soon. Thanks Again!
  5. I have a 1957 Mercury Monterey with a Turnpike Cruiser engine (368 cu. in.). I currently have a commercial group 29 battery that no longer keeps a charge; I need to replace it but getting another of that size is out of my budget. What group of battery would you suggest would be good for it? What is the minimum sized battery I could use? Thank you in advance! You all have helped me greatly with my past questions.
  6. A freind of mine whos in his late 80's has a big 1934 ford truck I believe it has a 258 v-8 flathead. He says it keeps burning out the generator. Do you have any ideas as to why and how to fix it? Thanks
  7. A searched around on JCWhitney and I found an "Adjustable Fuel Level float" that searms like it would work. ADJUSTABLE FUEL LEVEL FLOAT - JCWhitney It relays the level via Ohms resistance thus I believe that it would work with any voltage system.

  9. I have a 1936 dodge coupe. I recently bought a new plastic gas tank for it. Where can I get a new fuel tank level sensor? Can it work with my current stock gauges, or do I need to change out the gauges also? Thanks
  10. Well I live in Washington. I am not willing to spend anymore than a $120. I have a pipe bender and I know how to do use it. I have 2 arc welders, oxy-acetalyne, a plasma cutter, and angle grinders, among other things. I am very capable of doing my own exhaust. I was just wondering if anyone had done their own exhaust and had run into any particular problems that might be helpful to know about. The exhaust on my car is not complicated at all; In fact there is only one bend on each side. I'm not looking to have someone else do it. I am not going to spend any more than $120. Joe
  11. Does scott sell pipe and hangers or does he actually do the whole job himself? I cannot afford someone else to do it. A muffler place near me will sell 8' by 2 1/4" exhaust pipe for $20. Joe
  12. Alright then I will get some 16 gauge by 2 1/4" pipe. I just bought 2 flowtech mufflers (generic of flowmax). My grandpa (who had the car before me) had used the flex pipe. Thanks Joe

  14. I have a 1936 Dodge Coupe. The gas tank is not repairable. I have three options: #1 I am very good with metal. I could easily make some templates off the old gas tank. However what I would need is the float and the stud for the fuel gauge wire to go onto. Where would I get those parts or how would I restore the old ones? #2 I could buy a gas tank. Where would I buy one for a good price? #3 I could get a used gas tank. What other cars have a gas tank that could interchange with my car? Thanks, Joe

  17. I have a 1957 mercury monterey. I need to put in new exhaust pipes and mufflers. How do I do that? What gauge of pipe? Good cheap brand of mufflers? Any tips? I have a tubing bender and can weld well. What else do I need? Thanks, Joe

  20. thanks. for old cars shouldn't we use non-detergent motor oil because it will clean off the solidified grease that often seals up everything. Seems like last time I used non-detergent 40w. Of course if all seals hold 20w50 would be ideal. Joe
  21. I adjusted the idle mixture screws. They were at 2 full turns out. And now they are at 1 full turn out. As far as I can see that fixed my problem. Thanks greatly. Joe
  22. I think the idle speed is alright. Which could cause my problem: too lean or too rich? Joe
  23. I have a 1957 mercury monterey. It will get lower and lower rpms intill it dies if I don't feather the gas pedal. I just put a couple gallons of gas in the tank. And I recently rebuilt the carburetor. Any ideas as to why it does this? Thanks in advance.
  24. I have a 1957 Mercury Monterey. What is a good modern grease for the steering pivot points? I recently put in the red grease which displaced a black/grey grease. Also do you suggest non detergent 40w oil for the crankcase?
