Aloha!
Been struggling with what type of oil filter fits my 49 Windsor COnvertible. Its all stock, as far as I can tell, but when I go to the parts store and pick up a filter, the filter they give me looks too small for the canister. It fits correctly around the pipe, but the diameter/circumference seems too small for the canister. Since I've never seen another Windsor, I've included a pic of mine. Could you guys let me know, if mine looks original and what filter you use? Rusty sent me this:
"On the subject of oil filters, I have an old Chryco (Canadian Chrysler dealer) parts catalog in front of me.

It lists the oil filter element Chryco #1556 834 for all Chryslers 1946-1955.

In the cross reference section, this matches up to the following: Purolator P-82, AC PF-319,Fram CH-192PL, Kralinator LT-805 or L805,Wix PC-62NP, and Walker Deluxe RC-66 or WD-66."

I've tried the Fram, but that one too seems to small (unless that's the way it is supposed to be...

That is how they all fit. They are designed for oil flow and to allow for a dirt and sludge buildup around the filter without clogging the filter prematurely.

I have changed old filters in the past where the space was filled with dirt and sludge halfway up the filter.

No such space is needed in the middle because only clean filtered oil goes there.

If you cut open a new car's filter you would find the same space.

Hey thanks! I'm just surprised at the size difference, as the 49 Plymouth's filter was much closer in size to the cansiter. Hopefully I'll be changing the oil frequently enough so I don't get the sludge and stuff accumulating! Have a great day, thanks again!

It's also possible they chintzed out on the filter. I know today's oil filters are less than half the size of the ones they used in the 60s, on the same engine.

For the typical US V8 engine there are about 4 different spin on filters available. The original from the 50s, one half the size from the 70s, and an even smaller one from the 90s.

There is also a king size one used on trucks which is 50% bigger than the biggest car one.

All will interchange.

So, it is possible the new filters are smaller than the ones from the 50s even though they have the same number.

The Fram filter--CH192PL is what I use on my 52 Windsor---Rock Auto sells them--I buy a case of six when I run out. They seem to be one of the few that carry them...nice car!
