Well yesterday was finally the day that my '47 Connie came home. That's the good news. The bad news is that It's been three months since I bought (and test drove) her and I forgot how to drive her. I did manage to remember where reverse was. And I called the previous owner and he reminded me about the pull-out lever on the far, lower, left-hand side of the dash for free-wheeling vs. direct drive and which knob was the overdrive.

But the problem is, the car seems to be running sluggish and very rough. Whether it's direct drive (lever out) or free (lever in) whether I was in or out of O.D. (in third gear), she was just having a hell of a time. And she had no power left after 45 MPH. I know there's nothing wrong with the car. When I went to check her out, I took her on a nice, leisurely drive at 55 - 60 mph with no problem and nothing "broke" since then.

What am I doing wrong? What did I forget? I know I'm hitting all the right gears and shift points and I'm not grinding the tranny or lugging the engine, but she's just not the way I remember her.

HELP?!?!?!?!!?!

Thanks.

Andy.

Just a hunch, but I'd start by checking the voltage on the coil primary. Should have somewhere around 3 volts on each side with the engine running. I've had points get stuck after sitting a long time.
If the ignition is OK and you have spark on both cylinder banks, make sure you're getting enough fuel. That alcohol they put in our gas doesn't sit well over time, evaporates, attracts water and rust.

Is the overdrive operational? Is there power going to it? because, I do not leave the 'O' lever pushed in if I am not using the overdrive, even though mine is operated by a switch.

1st od goes from 0-40 and is rough at the lower mph's. If your OD is still rigged automatically and you have that 'o' pushed in, that might be your problem. And the Overdrive solenoid pin, might be stuck to the on position if it is no good. Having the 'o' pushed in/out would not make a difference.

I think Abe may be onto it. Sounds like an ignition problem. If the voltages are ok at the coil terminals check to make sure you have good spark at all the cylinders. Weak or lack of spark to one bank would indicate problem with the points or condenser for that bank The rotor could also be shorting. Believe me this stuff can happen at the drop of a hat. You can also check the plugs and fouling would indicate mis-firing. Good luck.

It could be a stuck float valve in the carb. When the gas sits all winter you can get gummed up carb problems.
