I am helping a friend that has a 1991 Reatta with a gas tank/fuel pump problem. His original Reatta gas tank is rusting badly on the inside (we have scooped out hands-full of rust twice) this plugs the sock and causes the fuel pump to become noisy and fail.

Today we went to a pick and pull to get a replacement gas tank. I tried two different companys that list new Reatta-Riviera gas tanks on Ebay and both did not have stock.

So we went for a used tank. the biggest problem, they poke a hole in them to drain the fuel.

We were sucessfull and picked up two tanks, one from a '93 Riviera and a '88 Eldorado. What we noticed was that these cars do not have a rear sway bar. It is possible that sports suspension cars might but I looked at 4 different cars and no rear sway bar.

I thought I would pass this on as many people on this forum own Rivieras and other GM cars. The rear strut has the mounting tabs, so it would be easy to add a Reatta sway bar to your '86-94 Riviera,Toronado, Eldorado, Seville.

Also, while the gas tanks are the same, the 1988 Eldorado that gave up it tank to us uses different lines out of the tank. If you are in need of a gas gage etc, you might be able to transfer some of the parts, but you cannot transfer the entire unit to your Reatta without some modifications.

Interesting indeed, Barney. Thanks for the post. Perhaps like the STS, Rivi w/ Gran Touring susp. or T-Type, and Trofeo had the swaybar...?

I have a stock 1989 Riviera with standard suspension. Their is some type of sway bar that goes under the gas tank.

Maybe the early Riviers had one and they got cost reduced.
The main reason we noticed the missing rear sway bar, is the gas tank is earier to remove without one.

When I was in modifications/ rebuilding Mode I replaced the rear suspension and fuel tank on my '88 with parts from a '90 Reatta.
The fuel lines/ connectors changed after about '88. I found my easiest solution at the time was to use the Fuel/ return Line set (plastic) for a '91 Riv to replace all my lines. These suited the '90 tank. Where the engine work was being done at the same time I created lines/ salvaged end connectors up front to be able to use the quick connect ends on the new fuel harness. And the Fuel Filter rather then being at the rear axle as found on the '88 is now up front near the bottom of the firewall as I recall.
Been a while since being under the rear of the car but I thought the Reatta sway bar kind of skirts around/ under the front of the fuel tank?
And that sort of internal corrosion in a fuel tank is the product of leaving the car sit long term with little or no fuel in the tank. If you do this in northern climates you end up with frozen fuel lines and "No Go" in the Winter!
