Hello Guys,

I have some light corrosion on the underside of my 1989 Reatta. It is mostly small spots where paint has chiped off, the spots are NOT deeply pitted or rust throughs. Any recomendations for preventive measures in these areas besides using cans of undercoating spray ?

Thanks

Bill

Semi-gloss or flat RustOlum will work fine. If the rusty places/chips are in areas painted body color, I would repaint with the body color.

Preperation can be nothing to sanding and priming, you need to determine how much it needs as none of us can actually see the problem.

The rubberized undercoating is NOT good if you already have rust since it will trap in moisture. My Explorer got bad...

Where are you located BTW? If you don't encounter road salt I personally wouldn't worry.

I'd clean the spot, scuff it a bit, and spray with some Rust O Leum as Barney mentioned

I agree on the plasticised/ rubberized coatings, they trap and promote corrosion.
Presume Rustoleum is like our Tremclad "Rust Paint". It's no good where salt exposure is likely.
PQR is the answer, if yo're in a Salt Belt State, otherwise come to Canada and get a Krown Rust Inhibiter treatment. Good excuse I think to come and visit us!

Greg,
What is involved with the Krown Rust proofing?
We used to have a chain called Zebart(sp?)and another chain called Rusty Jones. Both are no longer in business at least in Virginia. Probabally because the auto manufacters finally got their act together with factory applied rust systems. These franchies sprayed a tar undercoating and in some cases would drill and treat the insides of doors and other cavities.
When I lived in Pennsylvia back in the 70's a common rust proofing method used by "old farmers" was to save used 90w gear oil, add a little grease, dilute it with an evaporating solvent such as mineral spirts and spray the underside of the car. I guess this wouldn't be socially acceptable today.

The '92 Explorer I had was Zebart-ed, and was rusty as hell...

Ziebart, at least the product they applied when they were in business in Canada was a waxy substance, Never liked the looks of it because it didn't penetrate. Like plasticised products I suspect the Ziebart bridged gaps and allowed the corrosion to get established in voids etc.
What we refer to "Grease and Graphite" in this part of the World is the waste product you refer to. Waste oil is/ was applied as an undercoating but was not typically applied inside fenders, rocker panels etc. Just sprayed on the underbody. Probably helps some? but makes for a very messy vehicle to work on.
What Robert and I have high regard for, the Krown product is an annual treatment, $90. plus tax and it really does work. Lots of 20 year old cars running around up this way today strictly because of this product.
The original application involves the drilling of ports mainly around the door sills/ rocker panels because that's where all/ or most the void spaces are in Uni-body cars. Plastic caps/ plugs cover the holes. The Krown Dealers who apply this product obviously buy in bulk/ 45 gallon drums, not $10/ per spray cans. Their system sprays the product in a mist form, they have various extension wands depending on the access/ reach they need.
Don't know what else to tell you, maybe buy a franchise and give it a whirl!
