I have a deck lid handle from a 1930 Model A Ford that needs chrome plating. Apparently the lock tumble is not removable on the early 30 models. Does anyone know a chrome plater who can plate this handle with the tumbler in it without ruining the operation? The lock works fine and has the original key which is also the same one the door handle uses. I don't want to damage it and have to acquire another one with a different key.

Any suggestions?

Thanks......Paul

Hi Paul,

The guy you want for this job is Bob Ore at Qual Krome in Erie, PA. 1-800-673-2427. They will be here at Spring Carlisle this week, but you should be able to catch them next week for sure.

Thanks Rick. Unfortunately I won't be at Spring Carisle since I will be in Talladega, AL for the Hall of Fame Inductions. I am going to visit Stevie while I am there. But I will definitely call him early next week.

Take care. Its good to hear from you.

Best.....Paul

At the risk of being blasphemous, what about a repro? It probably costs less than rechroming an original, offers no hassles of dissassembly, and you can have it by Saturday. The Model A repros are pretty darned good these days, often better built than the originals. A locksmith can probably re-key all your locks to work with a single key for convenience.

Just a thought. Happy motoring.

Matt,

Actually, there is a difference of day and night between the die cast re-pop and a properly replated early '30 handle. Least there was the last time I had a re-pop one in my hand, but maybe things have changed since then?

Paul, if you're still around reading this, please tell Stevie I said hi and have fun at the race! My son is leaving for there Thursday night and I get to stay here working. \:\(

I don't really know specifics about the repros. I get Snyder's catalog and have been to their store for our '30 roadster and have seen the handles advertised, but never really examined them side by side. I would have figured that the aftermarket would have worked out the bugs by now, but if the're really cheap, maybe not. In that case, I agree with you--if the repros aren't accurate, better to get an original rechromed.

Sorry if I steered you wrong.

Doubt if anyone can rechrome it without removing the lockset.

Pulling the locks apart on the A door and trunk handles is not hard.

At the square shaft you will see it is crimped in the corners. You just need to carefully cut the crimps with a dremel. Then you can slide parts off. You may have to destroy the little slider by cutting off the end sticking out, but they are easy to make. Once you get the shaft brass collar off you can pop the clip that holds the cylinder and slide the lock slider that you cut the end off of and build a new one.

I would not send the handle off to just any plater. I would go to Fordbarn.com and find out which plater will actually plate the handle and send you back a handle that still works. Too many platers make parts look pretty and forget the parts has to work.

Many guys, not going for points, buy the later stainless handles. This is much cheaper and most people will not know. Do not bother with the repro handles if you care about how your car looks. They really make a car look cheap and stand out from 20 feet away.

Some Thoughts on Plating the Model A Parts.

Incidentally, you might want to try Frankfort Plating in Philadelphia, PA. They are able to correctly plate parts with the original dull nickel.
