Any recommendations of a business / person who restores porcelain license plates. I have a set of 1918 California plates in fair condition that need TLC.

Jeff,
I suggest that you contact the following person:
Darryl's License Plate Restoration
266 Main St.
Duryea, PA 18642
Tel.: 570-451-1600
Web: http://www.darrylsplates.com
He did a great job on my 1941 California plates. I don't know if he does porcelain, but he may be able to refer you to someone that does.

Grandpa,
Darryl's telephone is always busy, tried to fax no luck. Anyway I found a company that restores porcelain plates and will duplicate porcelain plates if desired.
Independence Porcelain Enamel
703 S Cottage Ave.
Independence, MO 64050
Tel. 816-252-8180

I'll let you know when they are finished.

I had Darryl's do the plate on my '51. They came out beautifully - almost too beautiful to put on the car! But you had better be willing to wait 6 months to get them back. I was told 8 weeks when I sent them. After 12 weeks I called and was told 2 more weeks. After 4 more weeks I called again and was given a bit of an attitude. They said "if you want them, we'll send them back today". I asked if they were done, and was told "of course not, a good job takes time" I pointed out that it had already take twice as long as originally promised, and again was told that I could have them back today if I wanted. Luckily, I wasn't in any rush. It took nearly 6 months before I got them back.
