Does anyone have any expereince installing a NON OLDS recommended carburetor on a 1970 Supreme 350 convertible? The shop that rebuilt my engine installed a rebuilt 17085213 M4MEF Quadrajet 4BBL,(vintage 1985), but accelaration is extremely poor (bogs). The car does accelerate nicely once moving though. Timing is set at 13 Degrees, and pings if set at 14.

I was just wondering if Rocket 350's were more carb sensitive than other GM 350's.

I think the 80s versions have a computer controled part and if its not removed might not run right on a non computer motor,it should not be too hard to find a correct year carb as any quadrajet for a 350 from the late 60s to late 70s should work. 350s were never made in the mid 80s and the small olds motor was a 307 and the 85 carb is designed for that size only. If the engine was a 4 bbl originally it might explain the pinging. 4 bbls were high compression while 2 BBls were low. Some shops just slap in low comp pistons so you can run pump gas. I would get a 70 carb 7040250. 69 and earlier carbs won't work because they have different choke set ups, manifold heat stove type on 69 vs carb mounted coil housing on 70 up. The later carb on it also has a different power piston set up and spring which may cause the bogging if not from a mismatched cam/carb/compression ratio combo. That can change the vacuum reading and the power piston spring works with a certain vacuum range.

This is all true for the Olds 307 carb, but the original post notes that the carb is a 1985 M4MEF Qjet. The first M signifies that it is a non-electronic carb (that first letter would be an E if it were an electronic Qjet). The 4M just indicates it is a Qjet, the next E indicates it uses an electric choke, and the final F indicates it has adjustable WOT mixture control. Lots of these non-electronic Qjets were used on 350 Chevy trucks in the mid-1980s, which is probably where this carb originally came from. It can be made to work with an Olds 350 but things like jetting and air valve wrap will likely need to be adjusted for your particular motor.

Thanks Joe.

The engine was originally a 2BBL, so a 410446 intake was also installed along with the carb described above. As you mentioned, there is an electronic choke on this carb that may also be contributing to the problem. I guess I will try to adjust as you suggest and see if I can it to run as I think it should.
