Much to my chagrin, the 1940 shop manual doesn't seem to have info about radiator removal. I gather that I need to remove the hood, fan, hoses and bolts that attach the radiator. Am I missing something? Anything that isn't obvious? Thanks.

It is indeed bolted to the radiator shroud using flanges on the sides of the radiator core. I can't remember if mine had 2 or 3 bolts on each side. Three, I think. Here's a photo of the shroud in which the radiator sits (upside down, of course):

Obviously there's one big bolt on the bottom of the shroud, but it is also bolted to the inner fenders and a bunch of other stuff, so I don't think you want or need to remove it. I think that by removing the bolts on each side of the radiator, you should be able to tilt it back and lift it out the top. Watch out--it's seriously heavy, so perhaps a friend would be handy to avoid damage to the body.

Hope this helps.

I havent done it in a while but you need to take off the hood, fan, pulley, 6 bolts on the radiator, hoses, AND the water pump. I dont think there is enough clearance to weasel it out betweent the 40 shroud and the pump.

On a '39 the best way is to remove the whole front end. It only takes 6 or 7 bolts, lossen the wiring harness and find a strong friend or two. \:\)
