Any word on the discussion, or do we have to wait for months till meeting minutes are published?

No, you don't have to wait months, but in a nutshell, and I'm going out on a limb here, cause, I'm not a Board member, but the BCA Dues have not been raised in 12 years, they have been $35. The cost of the Bugle to produce and mail is the majority of the membership fee,it costs just over $35 per member to publish and deliver as it stands. To add the pages, will add a few more cents to the production and mailing. The BOD, believes a $5 increase in dues is necessary to cover costs, which means sometime soon, there will be a increase in dues, with a increase in content as well. So renew for 3 years now, to avoid the increase in the future, even by renewing now supplements the income of the Club, to be able to continue production of the Bugle and withstand postage and production increases.
Hope you all understand this is a business decision, that must be made, now or eventually, and I think it's worth it!

sometimes the truth hurts, better now, than later, I guess, be reasonable, and look at the rest of the world, GM stock at $17 something and that really hurts, as well as all the other crap going on, in the world, this is real though, $35 just covers the Bugle now, so why wait, might as well do it now!

Sounds like a great deal to me. and perhaps the increased size of the Bugle will bring in more advertising and ultimately more revenue from that. GOOD JOB Directors.(imagine a thumbs up icon here)
Now since I sold the pick up truck that had the BCA sticker in the back window, how's about considering issuing a free sticker say every other year. That way we could put them on all our cars, pick ups, boats, lawnmowers etc etc. Now that would be some great advertising. \:\)

The Board spent a great deal of time both before the board meeting and during to evualuate all the options.
If we did nothing, knowing there is a postage increase coming in May, we would be in the red.
The decision was to increase the dues by $5.00, to $40 per year (I tried to get them to make it $39.95) with discounts for 2 and 3 year re-ups (as Roberta noted, better do that now before the increase becomes affective)

Also we tried video taping the meeting so that a perminate record will be saved, this also helps the secretary in preparing the minutes which I predict will be available in record time..........

I started this thread and here are my comments now that I am back home at the computer.

We had 3 proposals presented all of which would have meant more money for the magazine. 2 of the 3 proposals, that increased the number of pages by 16, would have increased the printing and mailing costs. Also, it would have increased the amount of time that both Pete and Cindy would have to spend on the magazine. Time that neither one was sure they had.

The other proposal increased the color pages by 8 pages without adding more pages. While this increases printing costs, it has little effect on editing, layout or mailing costs.

Cindy, who is the person who does the great job laying out the magazine, had some suggestions on how to get more content without having to increase the magazine size by 16 pages. We are investigating the ideas and I hope you will see some implemented.

She also suggested that with 8 more pages of color, that she could make the Bugle much better. That was the option we took at the meeting.

Roberta is correct as we will be raising dues in the near future. This is to cover operating expenses as well as the enhancements to the Bugle.

The Board runs the club on a budget and just like you do and we watch the money. We try to be good stewards and provide you, the members, the best value for your money.

Here we are talking about increasing dues to cover costs and Mr. Earl is wanting additional free stuff????? Good heavens!

Thanks for the comments, Roberta.

I know the dues increase has been talked about, off and on, for some time, but never happened (for various reasons). Even at (suspected) $40.00/year, with existing BUGLE content, it's not a bad deal.

Enjoy!

Umm...how many folks see your lawn mower in any given year? Rita probably wouldn't even seen the sticker since she's probably driving it all the time

To the task at hand, 12 years without a dues increase is a good run. Congrats to previous boards for being able to withstand inflationary pressures that long.

It takes a certain amount of time to properly assemble each Bugle as Pete and Cindy do right now. It's best not to press them too hard, as the quality may suffer as a result. We don't need to pressure them anymore than they already are. Sounds like a good decision.

Cindy is amazing at what she does...if Cindy has an idea, listen to it seriously. She really knows what she's doing. I've seen here work miracles with space in the Bugle in the past.

That sounds like a reasonable compromise. Like I said, Cindy knows her stuff. I've learned to just nod the head in agreement and watch her work her magic.

I think the $5 increase is reasonable. Our chapter discussed this and we were all in agreement that $5 is something we could handle. all in all, sounds like good news for the club from the board.

You pay for what you get....

The Bugle is a great magazine and the BCA is a top-notch organization. In a world of $3-4 per gallon gas and $30,000 'typical' cars, why would anyone NOT expect to pay more in order to get more?

This was kind of a no brainer ! With increase postage and other costs we had to raise dues . The big question was how much ? After much discussion I brought up the fact that " Its not broken - lets not try to fix it " The Bugle is an excellent publication and we get many compliments . We could make it better however by adding more color for very little cost. If we increased the pages the cost to publish would take a big jump and a 5.00 increase in dues would not cover it. A bigger increase in dues would not be very well accepted so I made the motion that we increase the color pages only and it passed 100 % . Our Graphic Artist was thrilled that we passed this and promised an even better looking publication ~ The Board , Working For You !
