When Peter agreed to the reprinting of the book reviews I write for Cars & Parts as well as my blog on this forum the game plan was to run one every two weeks. As the old adage goes, so much for the well laid plans of mice and men.
A quick summary of this year to date would be as follows - deadline for a new book as well for the first chapter on another, the regular Independent Thinker column for Cars & Parts, a few features for Old cars Weekly plus a full time job!
With that said I apologize and present the review of the Kalamazoo Automobilist by David O. Lyon. As this book is several years old many you may already be aware of it.

ISBN #0-932826-83-0
New Issue Press
Available through Kazoo Books or Amazon.com
Hardback, 523 pages
$49.95
This heavily illustrated book is in essence a well crafted time machine. With the turning of each page we are presented with an in depth, three dimensional picture of a nation in a state of rapid transition as seen from the streets of one midwestern town, Kalamazoo.
From the preface and introduction it is instantly obvious this stunning work was a true labor of love. For the reader these set the stage for an amazing journey.
There is, however, more to this delighful work than detailed, illustrated portraits of auto manufacturers, the supportive infrastructure, and the people behind them.
As an example consider Appendix B, a summary of automobile production in Kalamazoo. On these pages are detailed charts, in alphabetical order, of each manufacturer, company address, mechanical specifications, production figures and cost.
Anyone with a remote interest in automotive history or American history in general will delight in this book.

I can highly recommend David's book too! Having lived in nearby Battle Creek, I was very aware of some of the motoring history in the area. David lays it all out quite nicely. It's a fascinating read, especially for someone from Michigan. And most of you probably thought Detroit was the motor capital!

I've just received a similar book on Iowa-built cars. A very complete and concise book by Bill Jepsen called "Iowa's Automobiles: An Entertaining and Enlightening History."
