I am overhauling a 394. We knocked the core plugs out on Saturday and took the block to the machine shop. We also removed the head locating pins. I was holding the block while my buddy pulled the pins. While holding the block, I noticed that each cylinder had letters stamped on the block. This would be on the flat part of the block were the valley pan sits. One was an A, one was a B, there was a C and a CC and one was a D. There might have been a DD. Some were duplicated, they weren't all different. What do these mean? I thought I remember reading about these codes somewhere, but I don't remember where.

It's code for cylinder size. They were made to tolerances for the standard bore, but rather than scrap a block that machined out of round or out of spec, they'd hone it out a bit oversize and select fit the pistons (which could also have those letter codes). Uh, hope you marked the pistons to the cylinders?

I think part of the "select fit" assembly on W30 and W31 engines involved putting "A" code pistons in "D" code bores so they'd rev a little quicker at the expense of oil consumption and slight piston slap. Joe P, you have any insight on that?

"That's a strange concept, Son" said my father as he sampled the day's run of silvery-clear moonshine for taste and quality. "Good 'shine, that. Your grandpap would be proud that the gift has passed on to another generation. But yes, it's real strange that some folks feel like a varmint has more right to illegally inhabit and destroy your property than you have to prevent it from doing it."

"Come to think of it, that's why your Uncle Reade sold off all them rental houses he had. It was costing him more to fix what the varmints tore up than he was making off 'em. And the govamint wouldn't let him evict them."

I wasn't around when it came apart, so I don't know. \:\(

Cylinders all have slight lips at the top, so they tell me they will be boring and new pistons will be going in.
