Just got home from Philly and have not even unpacked yet, but am anxious to open a thread on the 72nd Annual Meeting in Philly. What a great time! The seminars were awesome and I understand the crowd was one of the largest ever. I'm sure there are some folks who will be posting pics soon but before I turn in for the nite I want to congratulate Mike Jones and all the volunteers on his team that put together one fantastic event. It was 1st class all the way. Oh- contratulations to our Web-father Peter Gariepy for receiving the Lee Iacoca Award for all his work to bring AACA alive on the web. Well deserved Peter! Congratulations to Sharon Lee for assuming the leadership of AACA as our second ever lady President. Congrats also to Randy Rutherford for moving into the Executive Vice President's position, and thanks to Dave Berg for a great year!

More later-
Terry

Just back from our Annual Meeting guys. Let me tell, I am exhausted. I'm not sure if it is from the hospitality suites or from actual work.

I rode the elevator down to the parking deck with our Executive Director, Energizer Bunny-Steve Moskowitz, today, and even he looked a little tired. But, I'd say that if you go to Philly and don't come home tired, you didn't get the full, complete, experience!! ;\)

Here's a little teaser from our photo gallery......
This gentleman is the former "terror" from Cheyenne, Wyoming, past AACA President, Howard Scotland. Sally Barnett is pictured in the background.

Howard said he was glad to get out of his "cave". Judy Edwards and I talked with him at length after the President's Dinner Friday night.

Anyone with pictures, please post them under the AACA Annual Meeting-Philly-2008.

There was a fierce battle over this hand made pedal car at the President's Dinner. The bids went so far past the value of the '86 wagon that I drove up in this year, that I lost track of the final "hammer bid". Needless to say Joanna Cooper, here with her daughter, will take the car home.

Here's my other Mom standing with Earl D Beauchamp Jr. under the star and on the red carpet just before the Awards Ceremony. Judy gave all of us a scare, as she fell on the escalator Saturday around noon. Both Earl and Judy spent the afternoon in the local hospital and we were afraid they were not going to make the Saturday Night Affair. But Judy is a trouper and she made the Awards Ceremony and got surprised to win an award herself, the Thomas E. Wells Memorial Trophy.

Ok, here's the deal. You've found an old barn find somewhere out west in a long forgotten farmer's hay barn. Maybe looking something like this 1909 Buick, but only in your mind, because we have years of restoration work to get it looking this pretty. But, I digress. What else is new?

So, you've spent all these years restoring this automobile, you've finally been attending meets, picking up those cherished awards. The first junior, the first senior, and finally a Grand National. To top it all off, you receive the coveted letter inviting you to Philly to receive a national award. Now, you could arrive on the stage wearing your usual suit and tie, but hey! this is a National Award, so why not pick up your award dressed to the "nines"? This couple showed all of us how it is done, much like Steve and Pam Heald of Pennsylvania dress up on the show field.

The Trade Show!

This 1937 AC was reported to be one of three cars of its knid made. West Peterson claimed it was the only one know to exsist. At any rate, it looked really nice in the trade show. Later, at the Awards Ceremony, this car was placed near the stage in the Ball Room.

Pictured below is Bob Stein, web master of the Tidewater Region, and also a Master Web Master Award winner this year. Standing beside Bob is our web site Webmaster, Peter Gariepy.
Peter won a very prestigious award this year, the Lee Iacocca Foundation Award.

Jim and Rick Schmidt (note spelling), owners of NPD
Parts Depot, are National Sponsors of the Lee Iacocca
Foundation. In return, they are allowed to present 10
trophies throughout the year at car shows and events.
They chose to pick Peter Gareipy to be their first
winner. Congratulations Peter!

That couple is Randy Hall and Marge Salvatora. I met them on the Glidden Tour driving that 1909 Buick. Like Steve and Pamela Heald, they are a joy to talk to. I love their spirit of "motoring."

Of the 38 of that model built, only 12 are known to exist. Three of those 38 were built to test the American market. They were 4 inches wider and came with two-inch wider fenders to boot. This is the only one of those three that is known to exist. Owned by David Campbell of Norwell, Mass. A great "find" story will appear in Antique Automobile soon. At one time in its history, it was titled as a Jaguar, cuz it was not known what it was.

Whew, West had me worried there for a while. I thought that I had part of that story right. My regional friend, Al Kicinski, that was sitting with my son, Mike and noticed that there was a lot of clapping going on at the Awards Show. That's good thing, right?

Maybe West needs to speak louder! ;\)

I noticed that if I didn't start speaking before the clapping was done, I wouldn't get any info out at all. My orders were to only "kill dead time," as award winners made their way up to the podium.

It was very interesting info, West. Every now and then you could hear ooh's and aah's as they heard the special features of some models.

On another note, I especially liked the extra youth scholarships presented this year, and the unique receiver speeches which had a lot of the audience laughing. Regardless of what the media says, I think we have some wonderful future speakers and leaders in our school age kids.

We shared our banquet table with a family from the Southern California area. The family's son, Kevin Mcguire, was very knowledgeable about the gas crises, pollution problems of the world, and was especially interested in bio-fuels. Kevin in a junior in high school and is planning to set up a school bio-diesel project in his back yard. A very intelligent young man.

Here's Kevin to the right of Mike Burgess and Peter Gariepy. Peter is demonstrating the AACA Web Site. I forgot to mention that Kevin is also their regions newsletter editor.

Edit Reason: mispelled Kevin's last name!
