Well, I finally did it! After procrastinating for years, I finally got off my bucket seat and joined AACA!

I look forward to receiving my own copy of the magazine (my friends will be glad I no longer bum their copies) and all the other "benefits of membership."

Now if I can just get the ol' cars out to a meet for HPOF certification....

Congratulations my Buick-friend. Hopefully they will appreciate your 70 Electra in Michigan!

All the best,

From one Buickman to another, welcome to the largest, oldest, and best club in the World (or at least the USA). I looked at a 1969 Buick 225 convertible a couple of weeks ago. It was a good driver, with a 95% good paint job, but in red. I have no 1969 literature here, but did they offer red? Seats were light tan, not white, needed expensive arm rest repairs in California, but fairly "useable" as they are. Engine was a camoflauged 455 instead of the 430. Chrome was good, except inside it was "webby". I think it was longer then my '71 Rivvie, in which case it may not go into the garage without "adjustment". In the end, I decided it wasn't worth the 15-19K price being asked. Did I make a mistake do you think? Earl Beauchamp, four '39 Buicks and a boatail Rivvie.

There was a factory red in 69 and 70, but they were very different colors. The 70 red is quite bright, while the (correct) 69 red is a darker color. Neither year offered a WHITE interior in the Electra, though you commonly see "restored" cars with white interiors.

There were some tan/beige interior colors, but from the description I could not tell you if it was correct. Note that there was a red interior offered, that was unique to the convertible. It is commonly seen on "true" red Electra convertibles. If the car is painted red but has anything other than red (or maybe black) interior, there's a good chance it was another exterior color originally. (Earth tones, like greens, golds, and browns, were very popular and usually came with beige or brown interiors.)

I think you did good to pass on it. Super nice examples of these cars are really becoming expensive, but driver grade (like you described) can still be found for much less. I've seen nicer cars (than the one you described) offered for under $15K.

It's been my observation that 1970s seem to bring more than 1969s. Not sure if it is styling, the "last year" syndrome, or the 455 (vs. 430) engine. Also, 1970s seem to be more common, even though less of them were built than 1969. The BCA roster lists many more 70s than 69s.

The interior was not white, if I said that, but it was sort of an egg shell, or a very light tan. It was original as far as far as I could tell, especially the door panels and arm rests.

Yep, I understand interior was not white, but just wanted to point out that I've seen many that got changed over to white. In your case, being tan or beige, I'd still bet car was originally something other than red.

Yes, you are totally correct. The car was that awful pea green cross with army green. That's not important to me or to AACA judges, thank goodness. The car can be any color it could have been when new -- unlike some one-car clubs, he color doesn't have to match the numbers. Were that the case with pre-war cars, some colors would have no representation and 85-90% of the restored cars would be black. The red on this car was not correct, because the man told me it was a Camaro color. Now that could still be right as GM used some colors across model lines, but I don't know about that. What I really wanted to know is if the car could have ever even been red. As for interior/paint combinations they did offer some strange ones. I had a '65 Electra convertible with a white top, red interior and that ugly "steel blue" color they had that year, a color I never liked on Fords, Plymouths, GM cars, whatever. I guess it is a form of light blue-gray metallic. On Fords it was always peeling off after a couple of years. But, my Electra was patriotic I guess, and it was original of course, since this was back in 1970. It also leaked like a sieve and the power vent windows would close tight enough. So I traded it on a new 71 Ford wagon and that was a worse car, so I traded that on a new 73 Plymouth Scamp, and that was a pretty good car. I had more Buicks over the years. My '71 Riviera was tough and my Dad's '72 LeSabre Custom was tougher, but then I had another run of bad Buicks - 77 Electra, 77 Riviera, 80 Century, 88 Skylark Quad-4 (fairly good), 93 Century was poor and then finally the 95 LeSabre Limited, 91 Park Avenue, 01 Park Avenue and 05 Park Avenue and those last four were all the best cars I ever owned. Well, I got off the subject here too. \:\)
