I recently purchased a 1948 Cadillac that has this engine in it. The best I could come up with is that it may be a 1965 425 out of a starfire. But I may be wrong. My wife tells me that all the time.
There is an "A" in the engine block casting on the front of the engine near the water pump. The heads have a "N" in the stamped smooth pad. The heads appear to have removed at some time. The paint is gone on them and there is some sealer showing.
The engine color appears to be original, as well as the color of the air cleaner.
I have looked at a Gazillion photos online but have not found an exact copy of my engine.
I am a ittle confused on the correct routing of the crankcase vacuum lines. I have a breather opening on each valve cover, one is marked PVC and the other is marked PIPE. There is also a broken rubber grommet on the air cleaner snout. I assume the one from the aircleaner attaches to the grommet which is marked PIPE. I have seen that in pictures. I do not have the correct breather filter for the valve cover nor do I know which one is the correct one to purchase.
I think if I could get some help on Identifying the engine, I would be able to get these line correctly installed.
Attached are pics of the aircleaner and the engine.
Any help would be appreciated.

According to the Olds FAQ on 442.com, An A block is a '65 425. The A heads, as seen in your pictures were used on both the 400 and 425 that year.

I'd say it's a 425.

It's definitely an Olds big block. As Dave notes, the A heads were used in 1965 only, on both the 400 and 425. If the paint is original, then 425s were red and 400s were bronze. The definitive answer is to locate the block casting number on the horizontal "shelf" above the water pump. If that's where you found the "A", then this is a 1965 425 block also.

There should be a curved metal pipe that runs from the passenger side valve cover to the grommet on the air cleaner snout. The PCV valve goes in the grommet in the drivers side valve cover. You can see the hose for the PCV valve coming off the back of the carb.

By the way, the carb is a Rochester 4GC that was only used on the 1965 and earlier motors. By 1966 Olds had changed over to the Quadrajet.

Good confirmations. Thanks.

Is there any way to determine which 1965 model car this engine came out of?

What are the chances of finding the correct steel tube that is missing?

And what is the part number for the correct PVC valve?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

-fisher

You might be able to decipher part of the VIN stamped in the pad on the block, just below the left head, but if it's a 425 as we suspect, it was out of a full size car. The PCV is the same for all Olds V8's for many years, up to 1988, just ask for one at a parts store.

Unfortunately, Olds didn't start stamping the VIN derivative on the block until the 1968 model year. This 65 engine won't have one. You SHOULD be able to find the engine unit number, which is stamped on the front end of the RH cylinder head (though if the heads were off at one point and were inadvertently swapped, it will be on the back of the LH head).

You should be able to decode the unit number here:

Thanks for the replies. I have found 2 pics of engines from cars that were for sale, both cars claiming to be 1965 Starfires and with 425 engines. Here is a pic of one of them showing the Breather. There are 2 hoses on the breather. One goes to the air cleaner and smaller one heads off under the air cleaner.
Where is that smaller on connected to?
