Im going to convert my 89 auto tc to a manual trans.. going with A568 hopefully.

My biggest question is, is there anything specific about the pedal assembly in these cars or does it interchange like most other chrysler cars?

I already figure i can use spacers or whatnot on the shifter base to get it at the perfect height for the console and find/make a boot to fit that part.. if anyone has any experience on what they did or pics for the shifter too thatd be nice to see.

Thanks!

Sounds like a fun project Tim. Take it or leave it, here are my thoughts.

568 although the strongest of the Fwd Chrysler transmissions, is overkill for your application, especailly when you consider going rate for a good one is $450-$500.and rising! The 523 is great trans, makes less gear knash noise and are still faily easy to find in the yards. As another bonus, the OBX LSD is a drop in on the 523. I'm running the 523 in my TC and so far, it's plenty strong

Get EVERTYTHING trans related from the donor car.

Whoops, gotta run, more later...

... Didn't know I had to take my 5yo to a B Day party, Wifey set me strait

Everything from the donor car includes the pedal assembly. I think you should try for a Shadow donor as the shifter cables are longer on the Daytonas and they will crowd the downpipe if there is extra length. Shadows seem to be the most plentiful 523 donors anyway.

You will also need to weld on a rear trans mount bracket onto your K Frame as the auto cars lack them. Once I sawzalled one off of a donor K frame but that was extra work, Polybushings.com sells a bracket you can weld onto your automatic frame.

As far as the shifter console goes, I have not converted from an auto car myself, only from one style of 5spd to another so I don't know if there are any tabs or bolt hole provisions under the auto console or not? You'll hasve to check that out and let us know.

What is your timeline? Have you started sourcing out a donor car yet? I think that would be my first step...

Alan

Probably will end up with an A523 due to availability locally.

Donor cars are plentiful here in AZ.. turbo dodge cars are a dime a dozen in the junkyard.. Im probably going to go pull everything i need (minus transmission) tomorrow.. trying to source a transmission from a 'known good' car or get one rebuilt. Not 100% sure yet.

Timeline is by end of december.. Hope to have everything by end of the week and start disassembly next weekend.. and reassembly the following weekend.

I havent done an Auto to Manual, but i do know the 5spd shifters usually have different mounting that would need to be welded or bolted to the floor on most Turbo Dodge cars.. Havent peeked under the console of the masi yet.

Ill post back once i find out about under the console.

One thing that im starting to look at, is removing that hideous console/armrest. That seems it would be in the way of shifting to me, and its torn and doesnt match the car at all anyway. Ill just take the lid off and build cupholders into the storage bin thats there.. car needs cupholders anyway.

I havent even looked, do 5spd's masi's have the same center console/armrest?

This is not a very hard conversion, on these K-based chrysler FWD platforms its only basically a weekend job at best if you have all the parts. I know with the proper environment to work, its really at full 12hr job for me at the best if i had to really push it to the limit, considering i only have hand tools, no power stuff or air tools and no garage

Sweet, keep us up to date on your project. You might want to get your clutch ordered ahead of time to allow for shipping time. The 523's will have the 'large spline' output shaft on the trans unless it's first year (1990) donor. To grab a flywheel in the Jyard you will want to have a good breaker bar and a 17mm deep socket and a second 17 mm socket with ratchet. For me, it's easier to use the resistance of one of the bolts against the other 7 flywheel bolts with the second rachet. Otherwise you have to wedge the flywheel somehow to keep it from turning. Sigh, I need to get that electric impact I've been wanting for JYard trips...

Ah ok, then i can probably just get by with a square hole in place and a boot.

Thanks!

Yep xtreme, not hard at all.. I havent had to work on a TD in about a year though so ill be going slow. LOL.

Good tip on the flywheel alan.. I did it many times with a large pry bar wedged and broke many knuckles!!

Grabbed an A568, going to have it rebuilt very soon.

Started disassembly on the center console.. not very easy task.

Everything progressing though! Ill of course take pics along the way for those that are considering doing a 5spd conversion.

Tim, just out of curiosity, could you elaborate on 'grabbed an A568'??? Boneyard? Ebay? You live in the land of 16V/VNT/high tourque 2.5 Turbo Dodges?

Your sig line says something about no $$, maybe that's a relative term ;\) A working 568 is a $450. trans any day of the week...

As long as you have it, if you drain it and turn it over, you'll notice it was supposed to get a proper drain plug-but didn't \:\( At the lowest spot on the trans there is a cast into the case 'divot' that is just the right size for drilling out and plugging with a SS 3/8" NPT hex plug (wait is it 3/8ths, can't remember now I have a few on the shelf, need to verify). It's best to drill/tap when the trans case is empty but I've read some guys have had good luck positioning the trans so the drain plug area is down, drilling/tapping then running a couple quarts of oil thru it to flush out any aluminum chips...

I like the way your project is progressing BTW

Lots of machinists put grease all over the drill and tap when tapping into places where it is difficult to get the chips out, or places where you really don't want any chips in. But make sure that you don't use a gun tap which pushes the chips into the hole instead of out. - Onec upon a time there were two little skunks named In and Out. When In was in, Out was out. Conversely when Out was in, In was out. One day In went out, and got lost. So Mamma Skunk told Out Skunk to out and find In Skunk. So Out went out and in no time brought In back in. Momma Skunk said to Out Skunk, "Out, how in the world did you bring In in so fast?" Out Skunk said,"Mamma, it was easy, In stinked."

Hey all!!

This project was put on the back burner for awhile, partially due to finances partially due to procrastination.

HOWEVER-

I would like to say that it is HAPPENING this weekend.

I just installed the clutch pedal and removed the console and installed the shifter boot in the console.

Got a flywheel resurfaced, a new clutch from Turbos Unleashed, and pretty much all the other little pieces to make it so.

Ill write a few details when im done about things to look out for. Biggest thing being the brake pedal looks specific to the TC, or at least to a ABS Turbo dodge car.

Anyways, ill make up a quick webpage with details and good quality photos and such should be done by next week at latest!

I just need to get some flywheel bolts and then im ready for the swap.. Im pretty sure the flexplate bolts are slightly shorter.

Alan, I just saw your post about the a568. A local here stock piles TD parts, and had a questionable one i bought for just under $200. I inspected it and everything seems ok, so im going to replace the seals/rtv the covers and give it a go.

I might do the oil drain, but transmission oil needs changed so infrequently chances are i probably wont be the next one doing it :-P

This operation is described completely on Allpar.

Best thing to do to improve performance and fuel mileage.

Waiting on your progress...
