David,

After your summary, this could be perfectly simple. Now, I know for 1938 (from Ewing's car) that a McLaughlin-Buick isn't significantly different from a Buick by that time...primarily badging. Is it possible, with the small number of 90Ls produced in the first place, 410, with the entire 90 series line being about 1500, that none of them were built in Canada? It could be simply economy of scale to have built all 90 series cars in Flint, especially seeing as there were only three Buick assembly plants in the US.

If I remember correctly, there was a period of time that all convertibles were built in Flint...this could be the same type of situation.

Just a (hopefully) logical thought....

Dear David:
Let's see if I can get both you and jscheib straightened out. Your car is a Mclaughlin RHD with a RHD body built by McLaughlin. The engine was built at Flint and shipped to Oshawa for assembly into your car. The final assembly was at Oshawa and it has a McLaughlin plate with the McLaughlin serial number 149330102 on it. It's a McLaughlin. There is no further information available at Queen's University or at GM of Canada. Believe me on this, I was personally at both places last August.
Jscheib, cars that went from Flint thru Amsterdam as CKD units will have GM of Europe plates, engines built at Flint and shipped as part of the CKD packages. They will have some items that are different from USA cars, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're custom bodied cars. To be that, they would have a body plate by someone like Hibbard and Darrin, Gustav Nordberg, or someone else.
Regards, Dave Corbin

David,

Somewhere I thought there were some instructions for posting photos, as I would like to attach the photo of the car that the gentleman from The Netherlands sent to me. Perhaps I can find your e-mail address and send it to you that way, or maybe someone can steer me to the instructions on adding the photos.

The car in The Netherlands is a Mayfair body, as he relayed to me and it is a quite handsome car, in my opinion. Do you know if all the cars to Europe first went through Amsterdam? It seems that the car was in England sometime, unless the body was added to the car chassis later than original. The nameplate he has says Model 8-67, not with an X, but they have beem only the Buick designation. I will ask him to send me a photo of the Mayfair name plate info.

I will study how to post the photos, or try, later. Thanks for the info. I would have liked to find you in Hershey.

John

Dear John:
I looked at the picture of the Buick from the Netherlands and it's definitely a custom job. So how can it get to the Netherlands?
It's most probably a CKD car, sent out of Flint as a Model 671X, which means it's body is only complete back to the cowl. The car is assembled as a cowl job in Amsterdam, so it shows as GM of Europe on the body tag. It's then shipped to Mayfair in England, where the body is made and mounted. The car is then exported back to the Netherlands as a complete car. Everyone gets the right taxes and no agreements with Lendrum & Hartman (the British dealer) are violated.
There were 252 1931 671X and 48 672X built in 1931, so it's very rare!!

The body style looks like what we refer to as an "Opera Coupe" I saw a 1926 Buick Opera Coupe for sale at Hershey. Dave!

To I think DBT from Singapore,
I read the discussion about an BuickMclauglin 90L 1938 there are written about an Buick from the royal family of the Netherlands. So I have a book of all the old cars from this family (the house of Orange)there are a Buick 1937 with engine no. 3190167 chassisno. 749160313. This car looks very well on your car but I don't now what your no. are.
When you are interesting I let translate the Dutch text.
On the end of the text Dutch people don't now what is happened with this car after 1948 when he leave the Netherlands.
Knowing !!!! starts with exclusions. I hope you can understand. It is Dutch proverbial

Greetings Henk

Dear Henk,

Thanks for your comments but the numbers and year are different. The car I have is a 1938 90L with engine no. 3418109 and chassis no. 149330102. Aside from the grill the cars would look very similar in shape and detail.

As a matter of curiosity is the car LHD or RHD?

One thing is quite clear and that is the car is running "processional gearing" with a very low geared final drive. I have recently had the engine rebuilt and first gear now is almost irrelevant!

Kind Regards
David
