From time to time our well-meaning members submit articles pertaining to the hobby that were clipped from newspapers, magazines, and other sources for inclusion in our monthly newsletter. Unless it's a really great article, my advice is to explain to the member why it can't be used.

However, I have used some material in the past, but strongly recommend that you get permission in advance and clearly give full attribution. Even this is tricky - for example several years ago I saw a great local historical piece in the Washington Post. The Post advised me that the article belonged to the author, who was an independent contractor and member of a Post writer's guild. I was able to contact the author through the guild and get permission for one-time use. I also sent the author a copy of the newsletter. Many of the best feature articles in big city newspapers come from independent writers.

In another instance, I saw a piece in the AAA regional magazine. It was done by a staff writer and they were glad to grant permission to a non-profit car club, again with full attribution.

If you're going to also publish newsletter articles on your club website, be sure to get permission for this too. It's extra work and effort to use copyrighted material safely in your club's publication or website. But just remember, once lawyers get involved and letters arrive on their letterhead it can get expensive no matter who is right!

The attachment link above has had the pertinant information deleted.

Judy Edwards and I are going over what we know about this situation and hopefully can add to it later next week.
