nearchoclatetown nearchoclatetown Member Registered: 08/29/02 Posts: 1986 Loc: pa.	The idiots in Harrisburg have finally realised that PA.'s tax on gasoline is second highest in the country. So, their way of fixing it is to eliminate it and replace it with a use based tax. The more miles you drive the more tax you pay. Only problem is, say I drive a Whatever that gets 40 miles to the gallon. And Hoover drives a Roadho that gets 5 MPG. If I drive 40,000 miles in a year and he drives 30,000 I pay more tax even if he uses 6 times the amount of gas I use. Call your congressmen. _________________________ Official member of the L.S.S. Pontiac59 Pontiac59 Member Registered: 10/14/03 Posts: 885	A tax based on how far you drive is virtually impossible to enforce and too easy to get around, especially if you have an older car. It's not that hard to deactivate the odometer - or just swap out speedometer heads come inspection time. (Those of you with the 88-92 Chevy pickups may already have an odometer that's deactivated itself!). Of course you can't do that on most newer cars, but I'm sure people will find other ways to beat the system. The only way I can figure they can even charge you is if your odometer reading is inspected - perhaps as part of the annual safety inspection? Otherwise how would they know. What if you drive out of state, are you charged for that? What if I live in an out of state bordering town - if I come into PA to buy my gas, they can't stop a station from selling it to me.. then I pay no tax on it? Gas stations in other states along the PA border would all go out of business. The only way a plan like that can realistically work is if the entire country does it. While I am sure most people would be honest about it, catching fraud would be a lot harder - it's hard to not pay a sales tax charged when you buy something. _________________________ Those who can, build. If PA. has the second highest gas tax in the country we must be first cause I drive to PA to save.Pa must love us new yorkers., did you ever check out the plates at your local smooken joes?? 15 cars and 14 of them with ny plates. Then we tank up most times at 10 12 cents a gal. less than ny, save so much we can afford dinner at your local mc d. Heck if PA really did do that I might install 2 or 3 gas tanks in my old Suburban and drive down there and load it up, it's only an hour and a half or so down to PA from here, if I come back with 100 gallons to use in other vehicles it would probably be well worth the 5 gallons or so each way to get it. _________________________ Those who can, build. Anyway the idiots aren't even smart enough to have thought of it themselves. I read a few weeks ago that Ca. is thinking of the same thing. Pontiac59 Pontiac59 Member Registered: 10/14/03 Posts: 885	I haven't been to PA in a couple of years, but it was only like a dime cheaper at the time, upstate NY prices were $2.15-$2.25, PA was like $2.05-$2.15, when we got into New Jersey a few stations had gas at $1.95. But you'll always remember where you got the cheapest gas, I remember buying gas in PA in 1994 for 90 cents a gallon. Of course, it was like $1.10 up here and most stations down there were 97 cents or so. Oh well. I almost have to think that if the state took their tax off, the oil companies would probably pocket some of the difference and raise prices on what they sell. They will add a tax to the gasoline producers, so the consumer doesn't have to pay it. Huh?? Won't the producers just raise the price per gallon to PA. gas stations?? Then a small efficient vehicle that just happens to drive farther then the gas guzzling SUV will pay more tax with this new mileage-driven based tax. Pa. knows exactly how many miles are driven by every vehicle every year, through our state inspection. The odometer is required to work for inspection. It's not about the final price of gas, it's about who's paying an unfair amount of tax. The Gov't keeps insisting we have to reduce our use of fossil fuels, but here is a clear case of them punishing the wrong user. Their reasoning is they don't have enough $$ to keep up the maintanance of our roads, so with this double tax they can get more. There was even discussion of privatiseing PennDOT. To further confuse you, Fast Eddie is trying to sell the Turnpike Comm. The only thing that is absolute with that is the rates will go up. _________________________ Official member of the L.S.S. While I have no doubt the turnpikes fees will go up, the amount of maintenance, repairs and construction projects on the Turnpike is sure to be cut back as well. I did some work for the PTC as an environmental consultant before I worked for the DER. They spend money in ways no fiscally responsible organization would. I can remember doing periodic updates of data for "planned" interchanges that no one would've built in a million years, and having those updates re-checked by other consultants for the same fee. Meanwhile I'm told that some of the Turnpike Extensions built since then (20 years ago) have underperformed badly, generating little or no new positive revenue. (Which may be why they're finally being shown the door, hopefully.) One of my co-workers in the DER used to be a PTC employee. He told me that for decades (probably still true) the single highest cost to Turnpike Operations was the physical transportation of cash (especially coins). I was told they used an oblique name to refer to it in the budget so it wasn't so obvious. The rates may go up or they may go down.
