Just wondering all you webmasters that have the "Members Only" section that is password protected what you have up there? Your member roster? Something else? And do you have one password or does each member get one?

Brian,

I do not have a password section on either the Brass-Nickel or Junior AACA web sites. When I put the Brass-Nickel newsletter on-line in pdf format, I make sure that on the contact page that only the officer/director's name shows. I XXX out the address, phone, and email.

We do have a Region email address that is forwarded to the director's and officer's without any one having to use their personal address.

I'm interested in specifically how to password protect a web page. I have recently began to publish our monthly newsletter in .pdf format and place a link on our Region web page. However, some of our board members feel this it is too risky to have this information available to the general cyber-public. It also defeats the purpose of having the newsletter as a benefit of membership if anyone can view it.
So, is there a good, easy html remedy for this that anyone would care to pass along?

Roy,
Obviously we are in the same club but for the sake of everyone out there let me respond in public.

Publishing a newsletter online is a good thing!!! Its a service to our existing members AND potential new members. I dont agree that People will stop paying dues just because the club newsletter is available online.

Relative to privacy issues - simply dont print the club roster in the PDF. The officers are already on the website, therefore publishing it in the PDF does not create any more risk.

I can create a password protected area in the site if neccessary, but I'm not convinced its needed.

Peter

I tried it awhile back. The idea was to post things (this regions owns its own cluhouse) like the schedule for mowing, hosts (getting clubhouse ready & provide drinks - everyone else brings food)for the monthly meeting, car show committee lists, etc.

I found that most of the members didn't bother with it, and could remember the username and password (both very easy names for the average member to remember). Therefore I dropped that from the site and now that I publish the newsletter I run the schedule three months out for the mowing and hosts, in the newsletter.

There isn't an official AACA position on this that I'm aware of, but I'll respond based on my experience reviewing all the AAACA Region and Chapter websites during the past several years that I was involved with the website awards program. There were several sites that used password "members only" sections and it always made me feel like an outsider. One of the big reasons to have a website is to help attract new members, and there isn't anything more offensive than not being able to look at something that might make someone want to join a club - like looking at their newsletter. Security concens are justifiable but there are other ways around that as has been suggested. There is a big "maintenance" issue with this as has also been pointed out. Members can't remember the password or have difficulty entering the protected area of the site and easily become frustrated. Having the newsletters available on line supplements the calendar of events on the website and makes it easier for people to get the info they need to facilitate participation. Our local MG club has done this and our attendance is up and we've not some new members through the site as well. So, my recommendation is to keep it open.

Why are we having so much trouble with those small words? We GOT members, not NOT members! I've always been a bad spulor and sometimes the cat dances on my keyboard.

Yep, Terry even the best of us, hit the wrong key occasionally. My left finger always beats the right one to the kepboard. (kepboard??? How about keyboard?)

My cat probably could spell better than me.

Terry, It might have something to do with some of us who aren't very smart, that when someone from within the AACA clubs asks "would you please do this?", we of course say "Sure". That how I ended up with 13 club websites, 1 monthly club newsletter, Internet project for Judges training committee, My personal website, held one school for NC Region chapter webmasters with planning another one, have 2 cars that have been under restoration for over 7 years of which one has been touched for over ten years. Participate in the AACA Discussion forum, watch the Turbo Diesel Registry Forum. For rest and relaxation, I go to work for 40+ hrs a week building dragsters... R&R.. yeah, right .

Oh, and at Philly Herb Oakes stops me and asks since the NC Region is now going to have a two business meeting, with seminars (like Philly) would I do a seminar on finding & buying parts on the internet. And I did my AACA member duty and said yes....

Short version, of the above: for some of us, too busy to take time to truly proofread our posts.

David....

"of which one has been touched for over ten years."

You are right. You don't have time to proofread do you.... I am guessing that one should have been "of which one has NOT been touched for over ten years."

It also helps when I'm sitting up when I type. I've been laid up with back problems. Found out I have two vertibrates moved and rotated and pelvic bone is also rotated which has the spine cocked at an angle at the bottom. The doctors have been giving me muscle relaxers over the past several years when it would act up. I did the back up again the other Saturday so this time went to a chiroparctor and they took x-rays which showed how badly screwed up things are. After several appointments we're getting my back towards "normal". The Alamance Region's newsletter deadline was the 25th. I didn't do anything to it until last night, other than write the editor's message which I could do on my laptop while lying in bed.

I'm at work (workly slowly & carefully), so ignore the typos.

At home I'll take the longer posts and use Word to spell and grammar check them most of the time. Unless I'm busy then I don't do it.

As for yesterday, I was at work doing posting that. My computer doesn't have a word processor program without using spell check in the email program. Apparently, I just got lucky.

Been here since 5:30 this morning. Got another appointment this afternoon. The back is feeling better, just have to take it slow and easy.
