Question: What publishing programs are you using to create your region's club newsletter?

Example: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker, Quark Express, etc.

I use Microsfot Word for my newsletter. I have used this program for 8+ years. Upgrading to the new versions when I felt the need.

I also used Adobe Photoshop to scan and edit my pictures for the newsletter.

I use Adobe Pagemaker for the Iroquois Region Newsletter.
Works quite well.
I write stuff all month as the thoughts come into the noggin.
Then Pagemaker works great to lay it all out on the pages!
Final production only takes a couple of hours!

Peter ~ I use Microsoft Word and have on an occasional problem with it. More likely me than the program, tho. As much as I would love to use photos there are two reasons I don't. (1) Our club has its own copy machine and even using the orignal photo, unless it is just the right lightness/brightness, it doesn't copy well & (2) by the time I get in all of the articles in the n'letter would be over the four 8x11 and one 11x14 pages that a 33 cent stamp will mail. I have Publisher but I really prefer to use Word.

We use Microsoft Pubilsher here at the
Richey Region Newsletter. We use Adobe Photoshop 5.5 for the photos which are scanned or taken directly from a digital camera.

Peter, I use MS Word 2000, I have been with this program for the last 6 months. I used Word Perfect in DOS and then on Windows 3.1. When I got this new computer Thanksgiving time it had Word. It was a little difficult to switch after 10 years. I kept moving my fingers in Word Perfect moves. The big problem I find with Word and MS Works are that they try to be smarter than the user and have minds of their own. I had been doing my mailing labels in dBase III+, which was in DOS. I could do anything with labels or a data base with it. I now use MS Works to do my labels and for other mailings, i.e. flyers and mailing envelopes. At one point I was ready to hook up my IBM PS2 Model 30 and do my labels, (The only thing I used the machine for, the drive would not let me into Word Perfect, I never did my labels on my Windows machine.) I have a HP ScanJet 5200C, which I hope to learn how to use. It has Adobe in it. SalG

I use Microsoft Publisher for the newsletter of the Brass-Nickel Touring Chapter. It has everything thing I need. The mail merge section allows me to print directly from Access (where memberhip information is stored) onto the newspaper thus eliminating labels. For photos I can either scan directly into Publisher or import from the digital camera or a file. Our issues are quarterly and average about 22 pages. The Publisher file is usually about 40 meg. I found Publisher to be very stable even when working with that large of a file. I do all the printing at home on a Xerox XD 102 work center which is a laser copier/printer. For back up I have a HP 1120 and HP 1200 printers - both color ink jets. We mail out about 75 copies per issue.

Peter,
For the Chesapeake Bulletin I compose the articles in Microsoft Word and publish them in Pagemaker. I like the versatility of Pagemaker and after five years of using it, it becomes almost automatic. I certainly don't use all the features; but manage to get the newsletter done. I detest the "intelligent" features of Microsoft Word with the dumb little paperclip that comes up and tells you what you should be doing. You can probably deactivate that little guy; but I have never bothered to do it. We print 250 copies currently. I am blessed to have a circulation manager who deals with the printer and the mailing. I do run the mailing labels. I have a Gateway 2000, H-P laser printer, an H-P scanner, and an H-P digital camera. I use Microsoft Picture-It and Paperport to process the graphics.

John, I forgot about the paper clip guy, he/she/it takes a little time to figure it out. My wife says you can change him or get rid of him, but I have not. I do not know all the little tricks of the program yet. I use the clip art that is on the program in my show flyers. I learned a lot when my employer sent us to a one day beginner class on Word.
