Thanks John ( & the rest here), that answered that. I assumed the rod probably turned, but thought there might be a smaller rod inside to the rheostat. Multimeter shows I'm getting connection to the unit. Found a guy that is familiar with this

What year is the car and what is your budget? To blast a frame that has significant scale rust requires a very large commercial type compressor, blaster, safety equipment, and it makes a big mess. If the frame has scale rust, it needs to be removed
