hi all i have a 72 Skylark Custom. i was working on my car yesterday and i assumed that all customs were nonlimited slip as i was checking the u-joints i rotated one of the wheels. i was suprised to see both rotate one rotated foward the other rotated rearward is this a limited slip. if the custom came with a limited slip differential what kind of gears does it have. the car is a 350/350 i think the car may have had a tow hitch on it at one time.
thanks john

Wheels turning opposite directions more than likely indicates an open differential. The way to positively identify whether it is a limited slip or posi rear is to drain the fluid and take the cover off and check for clutch packs in the carrier.
Or you could just stomp on it from a stand still. If both wheels spin, it's most likely a limited slip.
Ron*

Unfortunately, when you jack up the car and spin one wheel by hand and the other wheel spins the opposite direction, you DEFINATELY have an open (not limited slip) rearend.
If both wheels spin the SAME direction, you either have a limited slip rearend or an open rearend with spider gear damage.

Well, let me tell you, I have a 72 Skylark Custom and it's a 10 bolt single whell traction with 3.08's in it. It's the exact same setup as what you have! Go to your nearest Highperformance shop and get a mini spool for it, they only cost $130 which is cheap for any Buick part.
