Could not help myself and got the 46 Lincoln up to 65 mph and backed off. The stering wheel bagan to shake and the front felt like it was going up and down but not shiming. I have new tires. What was happening and what is the cure? Thanks.

Out of balance tires.
Worn tie rod ends
Worn king pins.
Excess wear in steering box.

Check these over and get back to us

Along with what Bill advises, check the tire pressure and make sure the fronts are "even" and the tires themselves are "round".

In addition to the above, worn bushings in the shock links could add a bit extra bounce. What happens when you bounce the car while its standing? Also check the wheel play, both loaded and unloaded.
