My 89 TC trunk remote release button fires the trunk latch like it should, unlatching the trunk. But it then re-locks immediately. Should the gas lift struts in the trunk be powerful enough to lift the trunk up when I hit the release (like my '66 Olds Toronado did) or is this a latch adjustment issue?
Thanks -

The gas cylinders should lift the trunk. However; be careful when replacing gas cylinders. I bought a set on e-bay and they were too long. This bent the trunk hinge and threw the trunk lid out of alignment. It turns out that the early 89 cylinders were an inch longer than later cylinders.

I have a 1990 TC and the trunk is very heavy and must be opened manually. Reading the above, I get the sense that there should be lift assistance. If so. how do I go about repairing and what parts do I specifically need? Thanks for the help.

I have '89 & '91, I did have 2 '90s. I replaced some trunk lid assist pistons. I always replace both pistons when 1 gets weak. I never had any of my trunk lids "pop" open ~ But ~ I did have one of the latches that wanted to relatch immediately. The trunk latch has an electric cut off when the latch is fully open. It seems to me your latch altho it is snaping open when you push the button in the glove compartment is not opening completely and getting "Full Release" from the solenoid. 3 possible reasons: miss adjustment, poor ground, hanging up. I think it is the latter. Open the trunk and squirt some lube all over it including the solenoid shaft. with the trunk open work it a couple of times manually see that it opens completely ans is not hanging up about 3/4 of the way thru open cycle
Good Luck, Lou

If you are refering to trunk lid assist pistons, you need to take the measurement lengthwise of your piston fully extended wink and then go and find a pair of the same measurement. You should be able to find something. If not, I think I have a spare set of trunk lifts for sale that worked.

nothing to exotic, just a coil spring that slipps over the barrel of the strut with a washer top and bottom that has a od the size of the spring and id of the strut shaft. The spring needs a compressed lenght of no more than 1/2" or you bend stuff. To install you cut a slot in the 2 washers and slide it on and wrap the whole thing in black electic tape.

Jim,
If your trunk lid locks after releasing with the remote switch, Is sounds to me like the lock latch requires a little adjusting. While the trunk lid does not elevate on its own it should not re-latch. Try lowering the latch bar (attached to the body panel), thereby putting a small bit of additional pressure on the trunk gasket. This will permit the trunk lid to rise enough so it will no relatch.
Good Luck

Hi Dave,
If the fuses are good, And the Fuseable Links are good, I would check the ground. The deck lid grounds only thru the hinges and on our cars due to age and in many cases lack of use the hinge gets kinda corroded and does not conduct electricity well. Use a jumper wire . Clip one end on one of the bottom latch bolts then the other end clip on the latch. If it works ok then install a permanent jumper ground strap from the hinge mounting bolt to the hinge arm on the deck lid side. good Luck, Lou

Lou,
I finally got back to fixing the trunk release after a few weeks of garden work. I noticed that the truck light would go on and off as I wiggled the solenoid switch, so i put contact cleaner and white grease on the moving parts and the truck release problem was solved. I had water in the trunk in the past and the mechanism was rusted. It was not serviced in fifteen years, also. The onset of the problem was gradual. At first the truck release was not working eaily and then intermittently not working and finally, not at all.

My trunk had broken wires from so many bending cycles. Sometimes the button would work, and sometimes it just wouldn't.
I agree with the above suggestions. I know you got your lock working, but there may be hidden issues you should maintain. I would start with MECHANICAL: make sure everything is tightly bolted, especially the solenoid. If the bumpers aren't pushing up on your deck lid, it won't "POP" when released, so lower the bottom catch. If your bumpers are missing or old, buy new ones. You already lubed, and that is important. Finally, ELECTRICAL: Run that separate ground wire around the hinge. Flex the wires while pulling them, and have someone energize the solenoid. If you have any broken wires, it will be evident. They are easilly changed. Your solenoid draws lots of amps, but for a very short time. The circuit has to be good, including wiring AND ground.
