I'm going to pick up a 40 Olds in a couple weeks and I thought these cars did not have VINs. If so, how do you title a car this old? I can't get to my DMV till next week so I thought I'd ask here.

okay they do have a vin # and depending on the state you title it the laws change some states you may have to have it inspected. Also does it have any lic plates? because that may help depending on when it was last lic. and how far back your state holds its records. P.S. I would love to see some picts.

I just answered this same question for a guy about a 41 Olds.

On the 40 the serial number is on a tag attached to the top of the frame at the left front. You should be able to see it by opening the hood and looking down on the frame rail. If the tag is missing, the other number you can use for registration is the motor number. Its on the front of the block above the water pump and on a tag attached to floorboard near the right front door. Motor number prefixes are G for 6 cylinder and L for 8 cylinder.
