What color were they originally and was there supposed to be a gasket ? If so approx what did the gasket look like and was it just on the bottom of the covers? Should the head gasket be replaced after I pull the head or is it permissible to use the old one if its not ruined?
Thanks for the help

Some people reuse a head gasket, I would not. It has crush areas that will be , ah, crushed. Plus the chances of getting it off in good shape are slim to none. Be espeially aware of the condition of the head studs after you clean them up. Mine were worn about 1/4 through all from one side. Only thing I can think of is galvanic reaction from cast head and copper gasket. I replaced them all. Early 4 cylinder DBs had no gaskets for valve covers, later ones did. I made gaskets that fit the perimeter of the cover for my '24. Cork or regular gasket material would work.
