I just had my first tank of E-10 and My Model A started to run poorly so I opened the hood and heard the gas boiling in the carburator. Has anyone else had this happen? My car does not overheat or boil the radiator which is what I first thought I was hearing.

Been running it in all my old cars, including Model A, no problems.

That is the only type of gas that I can buy where I live but it works fine in my A.

In this area all you can get is E10 for several years. I don't think the fuel is the problem, but if it is what other choice do you have? I have been working on a model A with a no start when hot problem. I thought carb was vapor locking so I made a 5/16 thick gasket and a heat shield for the carb now the carb runs cooler but I still have same problem. Maybe this Idea will help yours. Good Luck Daniel

I am going to try a heat shield, I only blamed the gas because this was my first tank of E-10 and the first time I had this happen all the years I have owned my car. I think it has a lower boiling point.

I drove about 40 miles today on a local tour in my Model A in 88-90 degree weather with fuel containing ethanol and had no problems at all. I think you have another problem. I don't think it is your fuel. Good Luck!

I don't know about Model A's but I just finished the Glidden Tour and a lot of cars were having trouble with ethynol fuel perculating. The talk among the tourist was what to do to counter act this. In cooler weather they didn't seem to have a problem but when the tempurature goes above 80 they would vapor lock. I didn't think it would effect my car so I put some in and I didn't think I would make it home. Fortunately we have a couple of stations here that still have regular gas. A lot of the Glidden tourist went out of there way to get non-ethynol gas. I went on a tour last year with a muscle car that just doesn't run on ethynol fuel and I was going to an area where regular gas was not available so I used an Amsoil product called octane booster with 92 octane 10% ethynol and it worked OK. Not like 100 octane leaded though. There are other problems with ethynol, if you sealed you gas tank with an epoxy product the ethynol will break down the epoxy and plug your fuel system. There is also a moisture problem with it, when you store your car for the winter you should fill your tank up, ethynol will absorb moisture, it then separates and deposites in the bottom of the tank. It is also hard on the soft parts of fuel pumps and carburators. I think corn alcahol should go into bourbon not gasolene.

1) I store a number of 10+ year old vehicles in a warehouse for occasional use. These cars all have their fuel pumps inside their gasoline tanks. So far this year I have had to replace 11 fuel pumps due to ethonal gasoline destroying them. Apparently the ethonal evaporates off and the residual gasoline is more to the caustic end of the spectrum. It destroys the pumps.
2) I have sealed my shop floors for the last 30 years with a product called "Master Seal". It resist oil and gasoline very well. In fact, I used to use gasoline to clean up the oil that dripped from my old cars. When you choke an updraft carb sometimes you have a little gasoline which drips from the intake on to the floor. Now that I am having to use ethonal fuel I must immediately wipe the fuel up off my floor or it starts stripping the sealer off it. I have to use kerosene to clean up oil spots now as the ethonal gas acts like lacquer thinner on my sealer and destroys it in a matter of minutes. How can something that strips the sealer off my floors be better for the environment?
3) Last, but not least, I have owned Model A Fords for over forty years. I have always had exceptional performance when using a Tillison X carb on them. Last year the carb on my son's Model A started running poorly. So I took it off and rebuilt it. But even after doing that I could not get the carb to deliver like a Tillison was supposed to. So I put the origianl ZENITH back on the car and it ran OK, but not as good. Shortly after that I had the same thing happen with one of my Model As. So I took the Tillison off and rebuilt it. But after I put it back on I had the same problems. So once again I reinstalled the original ZENITH. A few weeks later I was talking with a carb specialist and I made the commit that my Tillison carbs must be worn out because even after rebuilding them I could not get them to run like a Tillison should. He told me that the ethonal fuel atomized at a different rate than normal gasoline and that I probablly needed to "rejet" them for ethonal use. Has anyone had to do this and what is the correct jet size?
How can a fuel that does all the things that we are talking about in this string be good for the environment or its users. Its beyond me.
Paul

The last of the special built pedal cars will be going up for sale at the RM Auctions in Scottsdale in January. Built by the renown restorer Fran Roxas, this "Dusey" is truly is another work of art.
