American F-1 champion, Le Mans racer, car restorer and collector, Phil Hill died Thursday at the age of 81.
He wrote the introduction to the late Mark Howell's 1972 excellent history of the marque,
Racing Stutz.
In it he mentions his mother owned a Stutz Bulldog and the family always remembered it with great fondness. He also says that hhe always wanted to own a DV32 following an imnpressive ride in a 1931 DV32 Super Bearcat.
In later years be owned the Hill & Vaughn restoration shop which restored many Pebble Beach contenders.
I had the pleasure of meeting him about 5 years ago at the opening of the Chapparall Museum in Midland, Texas.
As anyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting him will agree, he was a very kind and humble. A true gentleman.
