I have misplaced the sending unit for the gas tank on my 1950 Desoto wagon. It is an L shaped tank. Does any body sell a generic unit that works on 6 volt cars? Help me at dfields3@elp.rr.com

"Hi first of all how is everyone doing? I read all the post here but it's been a while since I posted . I have owned my 49 since 2000 and in that time I have bought 3 new fuel tank sending unit from Andy in Ma. I know he does not make them but I have had no luck with them at all, even with a brand new dash unit. The last one lasted about 2 months. When I removed it I found that the resistance wire was never wound tightly and looked more like a spring. So I did a lttle research and found that Fords used a single wire unit also. I found one that was for a 1949 Ford from Dennis Carpenter Ford. The resistance readings of the original are 10 ohms full and 90 ohms empty. The Ford unit is 15 ohms and 100 ohms. Close enough. I ordered one to try and I must say what a nice part. It comes with a chart that tells you how long to cut and bend the float arm depending on the depth of the tank. It does not use wire but a resistance board itstead. Now the mounting flange is a larger diameter and is mounted with screws. All I did was trim the flange with tin snips(used left handed cut to make it follow the circle) to the correct diameter then filed smooth. This unit now works better than any I ever had. It is accurate as original ever was and the best thing I noticed is that the gauge does not bonce all over the place on sharp turns. Or should I say the best part is that it only cost $35.00 compared to the $80.00 for the cheaply made one.Yes I did try to find an New Old Stock unit. Collectors Auto Supply has them for $230.00 So if you are willing to do the above this is a good option. These were made to fit 1936 -1955 Ford cars so that is why the float arm must be cut.By the way a 49 Ford has the same tank depth and capacity as a 49 Desoto I am not saying the tanks fit. It is part#99A-9275 from Carpenters order form."
