you need to reduce the dimensions of the image to 80 pixels by 80 pixels

Peter- Thanks for your reply, I understand that the size has to be 80 x 80. I cropped the photo, saved it as the lowest res jpg Photoshop CS2 could do and it is 144K. If I crop it furhter it will not be the pic I want of the whole car. Is there another software that can lower the size further?

Peter and Wayne- thanks for your help on this, I thought the avatar would be fun to add. I am putting the pic up here but I would still like to learn how to do this myself. After all, I don't want to bug you guys every time I want to post a picture!

I did post some pics to the Stude and HCCA forums the other day. I shot them at low 1.7Mp and Photoshop reduced them just fine. Is that the secret to it all?
thank you- Bill

Bill, I used a MGI Photoshop program to change your picture from bitmap to a jpeg format. Then, I resized it down from like 2400 pixals to 800?, I think it was. I can't answer why the picture got out of shape, but I've seen it happen before.

Hope that helps!

Wayne

PS, Oh I put your avatar in for you too. wink

There is a setting in photoshop that automatically proportions a picture's width to height ratio to keep a photo from getting distorted.
When you turn that feature off and manually set the width and height in pixels the photo can get distorted.

I use Photoshop Elements and in that software. The Help for this software states:

"To maintain the current proportions of image width to image height, select Constrain Proportions.
This option automatically updates the width as you change the height, and vice versa."

Chances are, the software some of you guys are using has the same feature although it might be called something different.
I know in the two or three previous version of Photoshop I have used the terms used were slightly different.

Hope this helps...

Let me post the picture as it is on my laptop......

Wayne- thank you for trying! But I had to remove the avatar, the Stude is way too cute to have it looking like it got halfway thru the crusher at the local yard.....

If we can figure out how to transfer to the avatar as it is on your laptop I would use it and love it!!!!!!

Look at it now, Bill!

I manually reduced the height from 460 down to 300, which seemed to help a lot. Leave it up a bit, if you will, so PeterG can take a look at it.

Maybe he'll share his wisdom with us! cool

Wayne

PS, Actually a 3/4 shot of that car would probably look better, as you'd get more of the grill shot!

an avatar has to be 80 by 80 pixels. (square images are best)

otherwise the forum just squeezes the images to fix 80*80. thats why it's distorted.

here is your image in 80*80 format. I took some liberties with the image.

what do you think?

Peter

Thanks,
That makes sense, having it square. He, if possible, could have cropped it square and it would have worked fine.

I guess we need to have the original photo Bill, before you cropped it the first time, unless you like Peter's "climbing the mountain" version? laugh

Thanks Peter. I like learning from the experts! smile

Too bad this forum software does not allow larger avatars like some other forums I use (ie VBulletin).
Those forums allow 140 by 140 pixels or 20000 bytes for their avatars. Oh well, gotta work with what he have and be thankful for it.

Thank you for spending so much time on this!!! I think the the Stude is winning the hill climb! ( can you see the dust clouds behind the rear wheels? laugh

I like the idea of a more quarter angle/to front shot to better prepare it for a square format. (Besides she is cute from the front too!). I will also shoot a lower res shot to start. I will work on that, maybe this weekend.

Now if we could have a rotating library of avatars I could have a shot of each car pop up randomly every time I contribute to the forum! Wouldn't that be cool!?!? ONLY KIDDING!!

I will use Peter's hill climb shot for now. No offense Wayne but I really can't let the Stude out there on the net looking all bent up! She is way too cute for that IMHO!

thanks for all the help - Bill

OK Bill, we will give you a little time to put it up.

By the way, you can have a rotating picture avatar, as you can see on Roberta's avatar, the Buick Forum's moderator (Buick Racer-see sample below). wink

See Here!

I use a program called Irfanview (but I'm new at this too):
