Why does my 29 DeSoto idle better with the idle mixture screw removed.It has a new Zenith 14991b

It shouldn't.

Possible causes that I can think of:

(A) low compression
(B) if vacuum tank, then leaking vacuum valve
(C) if electric pump, one with too much pressure.

I am sure there are others.

New engine,no vacuum tank,Yes electric fuel pump will try regulator what pressure should i get. Thanks

The 14991 will handle about 3.5 to 4 psi.

The symptom appears to be telling us that the idle is WAY too rich; therefore removing the screw would allow air to enter the system and lean it out.

You might also try turning the screw all the way in to see what results you obtain.
