on the 60 deg setting the coldest the air gets from the vents is about 63. from other postings , i have made sure the mix door travel is at its max. i am sure because if i raise the set temp the arm moves the other way. does the 91 auto system always mix the air to the set temp ?
rather than have the air temp at about 40 as i have seen in other posts that probably refer to older reattas.
no codes registered.
could i be down on refrigerant ?
remember this is the same ac that blew the fuses twice , i think related to using the heat setting. fuses have not blown since i quit using the heat setting.

How are you reading the temp? I have a thermometer that has a prong and I stick it into the vents. Thats how I read mine. I have had readings in the 38 degree range.

using digital indoor / outdoor takes a long time to update.

i had three dial thermometers from fisher scientific ..... before we moved to florida. haven't a clue what happened to them. car is comfortable , but most other cars had ac temp about 40 or less.
compressor doesnt make any noise , but it does not seem to cycle on/off . maybe that's just florida

do you have a max ac setting that would over ride the climate control.

thanx for the reply

You could have any number of problems.

First does the air coming out have plenty of volumn? If not you could have a partially plugged evaporator.

Next, the system samples the air inside the car and adjust the output temp, this could be broken.

Since you have already checked the mix door, that would not seem like the problem.

Last, you could be low on refrigerant. However if all your sensors are working, it should automatically shut down.
Also, as a system get low, it can get to the point that it freezes the evaporator and you get very little cold air.

When you first kick on the a/c does it get below 60?

hi barney and thanks again

no , the times i checked it never got to 60 or below - stabilized at 62 or 63. .and stayed there.
will check with dial thermometer inside of the vent instead of lcd thermometer.
however the ambient temp was about 90. electric engine fan seems to work fine . volume of air seems fine through all outlets. closed the passenger side outlets and no improvement in ac temp.
interior fan ramps up on automatic setting.
will check again for any codes , but so far none.
when i first got the car the service ac light came on several times , but after i reset codes it has not illuminated since.
the temp inside is satisfactory , but i would like to head off any big repair bills with some maintenance.
on other gm's the compressor would cycle on and off , the compressor runs all the time on the reatta.
fuel economy has stayed in low 20's since i got it. have tried to drive economically , but after three tanks that's about it. maybe due to higher final drive than earlier models. 60 mph on flat road is @2000 rpm
o/d clunks in right about 45. it will scoot if you step on it.

Tom…
Your AC is probably low on R12, it has enough not to give you a warning to service AC but it is not fully charged. With a full charge of R12 you will not be able to leave it set at its lowest setting while driving. It gets very cold even in Florida heat and humidity. At a stop it will not get as cold there is not enough cooling air flowing across the condenser even with BOTH fans at the radiator running on high. I mention that you have two fans only because you referenced a single fan in your comment to Barney. You have a puller fan on the engine side and a pusher fan on the front. If you do have the refrigerant level checked. Have it topped off with R12, still can be had if you check around. Resist the encouragement you may get to convert to 134a, anyone in refrigeration can tell you that 134a is not nearly as efficient as R12. good luck with your 91, I love mine, KennyV

$145 for retro and refill.

i saw another posting regarding the ebay R12 , as it may not really be the original stuff , some kind of mexican wanna be.

did the refit to new r134 and the compressor fuse has not blown again.
issue now is the blower does not seem to spin as fast as it ahd before in auto mode , or if i choose high fan speed it still does not seem to spin as fast as it did before. i know it has nothing to do with the retro , or maybe it is just my imagination.
the air from the vents will get down to about 48 F when the setting is 60 or 65 F. when ambient fla temp is 90 or so.

My fan motor had the same symptoms for approx: 1 month, then it died. The good news, not that bad to change out.

shoulda got the delphi part which includes the fan. the bosch is the same size but has two flat spots and a nut on the fan shaft. the 91 i removed and replaced appears that the plastic fan is pressed onto a knurled shaft. tried unsuccessfully to remove the fan by lightly tapping on the center shaft.
all i ended up doing was driving the fan deeper onto the shaft.
deftly pried on the fan to give clearance in the housing and now the motor will not turn , the bosch when connected spins.
must have bound something up by tapping the fan shaft. have ordered the delphi and should get tomorrow and replace the motor and fan.
there was a post on the faq page regarding dirt in the evap coil that restricted airflow. i guess that's next if the flow doesn't improve.
smokey now says pay the extra bucks for the right parts.

new motor fan and gasket - 69 bucks .
motor is differnet and has leads wrapped around motor with heavy rubber band. motor is slightly shorter , went in easier that the old one came out. doesn't seem to have any higher speed , but we'll see over time. have old motor and fan for cost of shipping if anyone wants it.

thanx for the help

Tom, if you unplug your fan, & then direct feed it with 12v, it should run at it's maximum speed. The fan control module determines the speed of the fan by the setting you choose. That's one of the features I like about my 89. In the climate position, there's a picture of a little fan blade on the CRT. It spins faster as fan speed increases.

bcm says fan is at 13.7 or battery voltage. pulled fan and sensors and cleaned shmegalla from coil today . was not too plugged up. didnt seem to be much improvement . mix door is full cold. will pull glove box out and check behind there later. temp at vent will get down to 48F. don't know what else may have an influence on fan.
