I do not know how much info on an 87 I will get on here but I will ask anyways. I have a friend who bought an 87 Regal and it has the 307 in it. I think its the Olds 307 if I am not mistaken. He wanted to know some specs on the car lie horse power, rear end gears, torque, trannys, etc. so he can do some work to the car. Any help with identifying the rear end, or tranny would be great. He is short a manual right now so he is just trying to find out about the car for now. Or even some direction of site that might have the info or forums like this for Regals. Thanks a lot

The best I can do is the horsepower: 140 (very lethargic horses, BTW!). I owned both a 1983 Cutlass Supreme (sluggish) and a 1983 Ninety-Eighty (very sluggish) with the Olds 307 which is a very reliable engine.

Thanks for the hp info. I guess thats why they used to call them the "Gutless Cutlass!" Olds engines have always been good motors. I may end up with a 394 Dynamic 88 rag top soon if I can get rid of my truck. That was a neat motor and a good race one back in the day. Take care

The Olds 5.0L 307cid V-8 was highly strangled by emissions hardware (with lots of vacuum lines on the engine and one VERY expensive QuadraJet carb on it). There were a few Cutlass 442s with dual exhausts that were rated at about 165hp (pretty much like any other GM 5.0L V-8 back then).

Rear axle ratio is probably a 2.41. Trans is probably in the GM THM200 family (200R-4 if its an OD version).

I drove an Electra Station Wagon (mid-'80s) with the Olds 307 in it. Going up a slight grade, when I activated "passing gear", it only made more noise . . . with only myself in the car and NO luggage or trailer attached.

As I recall, if you put it on the Interstate and let it run with the cruise control at posted legal speeds, it should do mid-20s mpg, but that is probably the engine's only redeeming quality (other than the fact it is an Olds and an Olds 350 or 403 engine and trans will go into the same place).

Just some thoughts,
