Does anyone could tell me how the alternator is driven on a 1972 Chrysler 440 ci without air conditionning?
The air on my car is not working and I'd like to remove the driving belts but as they are also driving the alternator I don't know how to deal with it.
I guess there are specific brackets or pulleys for cars without air.
Could anyone help me?

It's not really worth the bother and expense. Just let the air pump freewheel.

In future you or the next owner will be glad you left it alone, if you ever want to get the A/C working again.

The A/C not working depreciates the value of the car but taking off the A/C pump would depreciate it a lot more.

Have you thought about getting the A/C fixed?

I'm planning to fix the air conditionning later, though I'd like to temporarily by pass it.
I had a bad experience with an other car having a non working A/C ,the clutch bearing seized leading to a broken belt. If this happen with the 72 Chrysler I would be in trouble because the same belts are driving the alternator.
I would hate to break down in the middle of nowhere because a stupid broken belt.
Buying the specific bracket and pulley for non A/C 440 ci is a quicker and cheaper issue than fixing the whole A/C for now. Though I still need to know what they look like to find them. Any picture welcome.

you need the pulleys and alternator brackets for a non a/c 440.

I wish it was that simple.

It is not possible to take an A/C car and turn it into a non A/C car without butchering it. The firewall is different, the dash is different, the wiring harness, all kinds of things.

If you could find a 1970s Chrysler 440, non A/C car in a junkyard you could buy the parts and swap them over. This would be a lot of work and expense for basically no benefit and what would you do with the A/C pump?

Good luck finding one. It must be a 440 engine, the 400 and 383 have a different block and the parts won't interchange.

Easiest answer, leave it be. Next easiest, get it fixed right. Hardest and most expensive, hack it up now and try to fix it right later.

If you take off the pump air will get into the system and cause damage.

I think there is a misunderstanding, I'm not planning to convert my A/C car to non A/C; I just want to temporarily by pass the A/C compressor (remove the belts only) but still have a working alternator. The A/C on my car has been non working for years and needs extensive fixing in a near future.

The non A/C model uses a different alternator (smaller, with 1 pulley) and completely different mounting brackets.

It's not easy to find the right brackets and alternator, they must be off a 440 car ONLY. The 383 and 400 engines look the same but they are not the same. The brackets will not fit a 440.

So let's say you can find the correct brackets and alternator. Take half a day to swap them over (if you are lucky).

What do you do with the A/C compressor? You took off the bracket for it remember? So you have to take off the compressor too.

This means draining the system of Freon. If you respect the environment this must be done by an A/C service shop.

The ends of the lines need to be hermetically sealed. If you leave them open air and moisture get in causing corrosion damage to the rest of the system. So if you ever want to get it working again, you have a problem.

So after all this work and expense you have a temporary hack job which will all have to be redone to fix the car properly.

Just in case the A/C pump bearing fails.

It seems to me that for a few more bucks and a little more work you could fix the A/C properly. Hell, it may even be some minor problem that could be fixed easier and cheaper.

I'm just saying it's an awful lot of work and expense for essentially no benefit.

And don't forget, it will all have to be done over when you fix it right.

Have you considered putting a new idler bearing in the A/C pump?

THOSE BRACKETS/pullies are not hard to find and are being
reproduced.

the brackets are the same for 383 and 440s, due to the dual holes.

Thank you for your useful comments about my idea to by pass the A/C compressor. You're right Rusty I should simply consider replacing the clutch bearing and leave everything the way it it. I should add that the A/C in my car is in bad condition because of a long time broken hose ,long time without freon and years of neglect. The car is a rust free low mileage but need some extensive mechanical care.Fixing the A/C will be costly and as I live in Paris it's not a necessity.
Thank you everybody for your vise advises.
