The left side speakers have stopped working in my 1989 TC. Both front and rear. Any idea if this is the radio or a connection? Thanks, Howie

I would look at the radio and connections there. This may be too easy, but did you try fading left to right? Speakers don't fail in pairs. Everything is plug-in, so start checking for a signal at the instrument panel and go towards your trunk. You can sacrifice a pair of dollar store headphones to test with. Put them on BEHIND your ears to start. If they are still way too loud, put a 25˘ resistor in series.

The first thing I tried was was fading the speakers.

You're welcome. I can't think of a cheaper/more effective way.

Static usually happens with lose connections. It could be at the speaker, in a connector, or it could be inside the wire insulation, usually at a flex point. Pull on your wires hard and steady! If you feel the insulation growing, you know the copper is broken inside. Unless you can solidly attach, use the most flexible wire you can find.

Speaker wires can be lamp cord, but amplifier wires need to be shielded cable.

I hope you find your problem.

Dave

Well? It's been ten days... Did you test it yet? What did you find?

I have not had a chance to try to find the short. I appreciate the advice.

I have the same issue with my front speakers going out. Same thing, hit a bump followed by static, followed by loss of sound. Sometimes, if I turn the radio or car off, they come back and the process repeats itself. I, too, need to chase a short it seems...

I'm going to give you what may seem like a strange suggestion. This did happen on one of my TCs. Under the hood, follow the heavy black wire that feeds the infamous fuseable links behind the battery. Clean the bullet shaped connector and be sure it fits tight, if not spread the male end a little. test both ends of all the fuseable wires, to be sure they are good. In my case there was a greay one that was bad and that did not cause the radio to not function, it just caused a low voltage situation. I replaced that wire, wiggled the joystick a little all around. Result= the radio improved completely. Good Luck, Lou

Great suggestion, Lou. I also put silicone GREASE (not sealer) in that connector to keep water and air out, so it can't happen again.

Dow makes silicone grease in squeeze-tubes (it's like real heavy petroleum jelly). It won't run out under high heat.

watch out using any old silicone. needs to be electronics grade otherwise it will corrode the wire and connectors

thanks for the lead on this issue. i too have this same problem and i could not find it in the speaker wires nor with the connector in in the radio. and it has done this since i first purchased this low-mileage TC. at 27k miles it was doing it.
i will try this solution next weekend!
thanks again!

Hey Folks,
I believe that Silicone based jelly is referred to as dilectric grease, There are basjcally 2 types: 1 insulates, you don't want that one for this use, 2 improves the electrical connectivity. That the one you want.
