I have a 1951 DeSoto. The stock engine is long gone, it now has a 53 Dodge pickup engine with a cracked block.

I am planning on replacing this with a rebuilt 265 Chrysler flathead 6.

For hiway driving would like to install a lower (numerical) rear axle gear than the stock 3.9:1.

According to my reference books this same rear axle was used on Chrysler and DeSoto 6 from 1940 to 1954.

The lowest gearset I can find for this axle is a 3.54:1 used in the late 40s Chryslers.

Are there any other gearsets? Was this axle used in any other vehicles?

My reference works only go to 1954.

Would appreciate any help in finding better gearing, or feedback from anyone who has tried swapping to lower gears.

Rusty, I have an answer in the T&C post---pull up the posts from Jon and you will find a wealth of info on this change over. Jon is VERY adament about changing anything on the cars---no modifications. If he was happy with the look when it was done it must look factory and correct......52er
