In order to get my 1948 Continental Coupe through our safety inspection here I have to have at least lap seat belts on the front seats and four-way (emergency) flashers. Since the seat belts were offered from the factory, can anyone tell me or better yet send me a photograph of where they are attached to the floor? How is the four-way flasher unit fitted into the wiring? Thanks Harry

Seat belts were not offered until 1965 and 4 way flashers came about in 1966. Doesn't your state grandfather older cars?

I am with the US Army in Germany so we have a different set of rules to follow, i.e. Army Regulations or in this case USAREUR Pam 190-6. The Provost Marshal says it is based on German requirements and since I am a Government Relations Advisor I told him that German law only requires the four-way flashers for Oldtimers (no exceptions) and seat belts for vehicles after 1966. I have the flashers in all of my other Oldtimers and it is not hard to install if you know where to tap into the electrics at. Since the Continental had turn signals it should be a lot easier to do than some of the others I have had to install it in. I do not have seat belts in any of my other old cars and have passed inspection with them for 20 years – I do not know why they think the Continental should have. But while I fight this windmill I would be interested in if anyone has ever installed them in their Continental Coupe. Thanks Harry

An easy way would be to get a small bracket to mount a toggle switch under the dash that would parallel both turn signals when switched on. Probably need a heavy duty flasher for more lights. You'd need to flip the turn signal and then the toggle switch. If they make you have more brake lights, you'd need two relays so the front signals wouldn't come on when you step on the brake.

Narragansett produces a wiring kit for 4 way flashers, also for converting to three brake lights.

Are your orig. turn signals plugged in to one of those orig. units? Because, temporarely, you could plug in one of the aftermarket turn signal levers that have a button that holds the lever a certain way and makes the turn signals all go on at once.
