Hi, I need a little help with decifering my ID #s.The window dash id# is 3F01H166993 the H stands for 351 cleveland motor 2v,yet it has a 302-2v how can I verify the correct motor? where would the Id # for the motor be,also is there any reference material out there to tell me the id`s ,& where to look for them .if I have the motor #`s is there also a FOMOCO tel.# I could call for the tec questions, Thank You to all that reply!!!PS: is there a 73 mustang club out there as well?

I think Ford started stamping the vin into the engine block in '68 but I'm not sure where the stamping is located.

It would seem to me that the original 351C was replaced with the 302 at some point.

If the 302 were original to the car the H in the vin would have been an F.

check the drivers door for the data tag it will have a vin on it, Ford also screwed or stapled a tag to the drivers side front of the rad support that would contain the vin.

The title has the vin on it also.

These should all match however it is possible that someone changed the dash and didn't change the tag with the vin on it, the same could happen with a door or rad support.

Ford offers for free a vehicle history report it takes a 6 to 8 weeks to get but it will tell you what options the car came with and when it was built. You can call ford at 1-800-392-3673 and request a history report for the car all you need is the vin.

FORD MADE TWO DIFFERENT 351 ENGINES IN '73, A CLEVELAND VERSION AND A WINDSOR VERSION. I DO NOT RECALL EVER SEEING A 351 WINDSOR IN A '73 BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.
THE 351W IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE 302 IN LOOKS, HOWEVER VERY FEW OF THE PARTS INTERCHANGE BECAUSE OF THE HIGHER BLOCK HEIGHT ON THE 351W. IT IS AN OUTSTANDING ENGINE. THEY ACTUALLY MADE ANOTHER 351, THE 351M (MODIFIED IN '74) BUT IT WAS NEVER USED IN THE MUSTANG.
HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 302 AND 351W SINCE I IMAGINE THAT THE ENGINE TAG ATTACHED TO THE COIL BRACKET IS LONG GONE, AS MOST ARE.
CHECK THE FIRING ORDER ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD;
302 FIRING ORDER:1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
351 FIRING ORDER:1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

I think that the Windsor also had 18mm plugs where as the Cleveland had 14mm.

Starting in 1968 all Ford engines are stamped with the VIN at the back of the block on top, behind the intake manifold. The casting numbers and date code are located behind the starter.
