I see that you also have kits for 70-72 Skylark, of which the AC panel piece is correct for a 1970 LeSabre/Wildcat/Electra.

1. Do you plan to make any of the other pieces for the full-size 1970 models?

2. On the AC piece, does it go OVER the original? If so, does the (normally) back-lit lettering still illuminate?

Greg C, I purchased three "Climate Control" escutcheons from Greg S. They are superb! The new "Climate Control" piece replaces the original. I was able to replace one by removing the black lower dash panel and loosening the "Climate Control" head by backing out the two retainers. Then worked the old piece off the head and positioned the new one on the head and re-installed the head. The new piece is transparent where it need to be to illuminate the indicators. Looks like new.

As far as the rest of the dash pieces, the supplier I bought them from (Jim Shilf) passed away and I haven't heard if anyone is still selling them. Jim's pieces had a wood-grain affect that differs from Greg's Climate Control piece, but they look 100 % better than the cracked, discolored originals. If I can figure out how, I could post a photo of the ones I put in my '70 Electra 225.

Regards,

[Edit] I just realiized this post has two Greg's...S & C!

Here's a "Before" shot of the Climate Control. Looks typical...cracked, faded, discolored. The dash piece to the right is the one I purchased from Jim Shilf. It's surface is a bit different, but looks so much better than the original.

New piece installed in the dash

The "old" and "new" comparison.

I got the idea to get these from a friend in KC that has Greg S's dash pieces in his '70 Gran Sport Conv. Hope this helps.

Hi folks. Thanks for all the kind comments. I too, had talked with Jim and at one time I had a piece of his to review (he wanted to match up my Climate Control pieces with his). I have an original piece I pulled from a car in a junkyard.

I would consider doing a replacement set, similar to Jim's if I had a good set to work from for my art and film work. If anyone has one they would like to loan me, I'll need it for a few weeks and then be done with it. No damage or installation needed - I just need it for a template. In return, I'll send said donor a new set, once completed.

Please email me at gsetter@mac.com if you have something that I can work with.

Thanks,

GS

Hey, these look REALLY good! With all due respect to Jim's creations there is no comparison. Great work, Greg S.!!

I have lots of questions (surprise!) and will post them in case others are wondering the same things...

I've never had my AC control head apart, so I'm still unclear what must be removed. Do you 'peel' off just the woodgrain, or does full plastic trim plate come off? Is replacement "just" a decal, or a full plastic face plate?

Regarding the loan of the remaining Electra pieces, I'm afraid I can't help since my car is in hibernation. Do you need NICE original pieces, to reproduce them, or will the usual cracked ones be sufficient (for patterns, and font)? Would these additional repop trim pieces be decals that go on OVER the originals? If so, I hope they are THIN.

Lastly, I notice the repop has "DEF" instead of the original "DE-ICE". (I think it changed in 71 or 72). Do you make 'em BOTH ways? If not, is it feasible to offer both ways?

The "woodgrain" peels off the front of the clear plastic "Light Pipe". The replacement has an adhesive backing. The area of the repro where the temp control is locates is punched for removal. You can sort of see the punch line in the picture. When installing, it centers on the raised edge around the temp control area.

DEICE vs DEF...I never noticed that. I was just so happy to see a good looking dash that I didn't notice.

I think Greg S. made these originally for the A-body and they may be different in that area.

Rich,
Thanks for clarifying the replacement process.

The "De-ice" vs. "Def" is related to model year. All models had "De-ice" in 1970. Then, in 71 or 72 (I once knew this blush) it changed. I've often wondered if it was a truth-in-advertising issue or a commonization with other GM products.

I'll have to touch base with Greg S. Although my 70's woodgrain is currently in great shape, I anticipate the day when it will (much like the bumper emblems mad) deteriorate.

I went through a number of blows to the head (figuratively) on the DEICE vs DEF issue on the A Bodies. Finally, it came out that there was indeed a switch at some point and that any judging done on a car would not get dinged for either piece. Then everyone was nice again.... smile

Anyway, the Riv pieces that I do, and probably the ones that are closer in coloring and usable cutting dies is the DEICE version. Here is a pic:

Anyone have a PDF of the shop manual with the control diagram? Would help a bunch on the artwork. I don't have earlier manuals - just my '71 & '72 ones for my cars.

Thanks!

GS

Just bumping this one back up... Also - I have a few blem kits available, as well. Blems are usually ones that are either slightly off-color, or the registration on a piece or two might be off.

Nothing really nasty - I trash the really bad ones. E-mail for more info!

Need to move these out so down the price goes. Now $125 a set plus shipping. I will not rerun the Riv kits so when these are gone, they're gone...

Get your set now - I figure I have only 25 or so left. Thanks!
