What do you use for a printer? I do over 300 pages a month. I have a HP Photo printer with the seprate colors. It's acting up now, had it for 2 almost 3 years. I am going to have to look in to some thing else. Any Ideas? Deby

I help print the newsletter for our chapter of a single-marque club, and we previously used an H-P inkjet printer. It was VERY slow (1 page per 60-90 seconds!) but the ink was very cheap (about $20 for a 3-color cartridge, and I refilled the black ink cartridge for maybe $4 per fill).
That finally gave out, and we've just bought a Samsung #CLP-600N color laser printer. It's very fast (maybe 40-55 sheets per minute), does a splendid job, and is very solidly built (and it's fairly big, too). The price is about $400, give or take. However, the toner cartridges ain't cheap. There are four: black, red, yellow and blue, and each one is more than $80 (that's rock bottom per-unit, unless you buy multiples).
We have now printed two issues on the new machine. The printer came with ''half sized'' cartridges, supposed to "only" get 2000 copies each, but our black cartridge went out after about 700 copies. Now, these copies tend to be ''concentrated'' in that we have 3 columns (like a magazine) and run numerous small photos, so they're not like double-spaced term papers...they use a LOT of ink. So I must be fair.
Anyway, I will try to keep you posted on how the machine works out, over the next few weeks and months.
I do believe that an editor / publisher puts in an awful lot of time for his or her organization, and they deserve ''the best'', especially when it comes to speed and ease of use. The color laxer printer may be a tad ''deluxe'' for our needs, but it sure is easy on the guy who has to run it!

I'm using a HP K550 with 4 cartidges. Haven't had any problems with it. You can buy a duplexer (think that's what it called to print both sides at one shot. I don't have it) The print was about $180 and the other piece runs about the same. Taking out the time to allow the ink to fully dry before printing the second side (if you don't it'll try picking up two sheets ata time), I can print 60-65 copies of our newsletter in a quite reasonable about of time. If remember correctly, all text page runs in about 10 minutes, colored, with photos takes about 30 minutes. I can time them again in about two weeks when I run the issue. As for the ink, The cartridges you have to watch prices. There are the regular size and the XL. I was at office depot and found I could buy 2 reg cheaper than the XL and got an extra ml to boot. With the XL cartridges, print 60-65 issues, (4 8.5x11 pages both sides) I use about 4 to 5 a year. I seem to be harder on of coruse black and cyan and esiest on the magenta.

Here is a suggestion that worked for me when my printer finally gave up the ghost...
Have you tried Kinkos ? It is surprising easy and cheap. Once I tried them for our newsletter, I have not gone back to the time and effort it took to just print my own.

How much of your newsletter is colored? That will make a big difference in your cost.

.49 x 7= $3.83 x 65 issues $248.95 Plus 1pg B&W on top of that (figuring .08 x 65 = 5.20) Total 254.15 monthly $3,049.80 yearly
I print and mail first class the newsletter monthly, for less than 1,000 per year. Can't recall the exact figure of the top of my head.

Well I decided to keep with the same kind as I have extra ink for now any way. I'll keep looking for a cheaper place for ink. Having it printed for me is not a option as we live 55 miles from the nearest store that would do it. So maybe next time I'll do the laser but not this time. I do a lot with pictures and always do 5 pages back & front or more! Thanks for the help!

The last of the special built pedal cars will be going up for sale at the RM Auctions in Scottsdale in January. Built by the renown restorer Fran Roxas, this "Dusey" is truly is another work of art.
