I know this a dumb question, How do you check the oil level in a '24 Model T. I have just bought this car and do not have a manual yet.
Thanks folks

under the car on the right side on what would be the bellhousing any other car, you will see two petcocks. The oil should be between the two petcocks. You can open the upper one and add oil until it drips out. Oil capacity on a "T" is 4 qts.

Hey thanks 58Mustang...been piddling with her all night. Trying to get ready for the fourth. Does the engine oil lube the transmission as well? I'm in the learning curve...had to make a gasket for the carb bowl, hope it holds. Kinda like working on a big lawn mower engine with out of date parts.
Thanks again

Yes the oil is shared between the engine and transmission. You will notice that the oil pan spans both. The model T is very easy to keep running. There are a lot of books on the T. You can also contact Bob Lang if you need any parts.

My grandfather gave me a model T when I was 10 years old, and I have never recovered. I'll have to get another some day.

Thats what I figured. She is running like a top...just need to trouble shoot the cooling system now, seems to be over heating. I idled it this morning for about 5 mins to work in the new oil and gas treatment and it released some coolant. Maybe not enough air at idle. Thanks for your help...really need to get the manual.

Don't use any graphite based lube in the T - messes up the flywheel magnets! Water in the T will seek it's own ideal level so loosing a bit while standing still isn't always a bad sign. The T cooling systems works best when it reaches boiling point anyway-water boils up through the system, into the top tank, then drains down through the radiator to cool and goes back into the engine through the bottom hose. I usually advise people with alleged overheating problems to take off their accessory water pumps. The impeller tends to slow down the flow of water. Make sure your radiator is clean, your fan belt tight, and you should be ok. Nothing beats a T in a 4th of July Parade.

Hey thanks. The surface lube I use is X-19A. It is a great lubricant and it stops rust...really works. Check them out at www.x-19a.com. Thanks for the advice.

Is there any way to test the cooling system to make sure water is circulating properly?
