Now I need to dig a fedora out of storage....

Today I picked up the car, got the receipt squared away and everything. I almost felt bad taking the car away from the older gentleman who owned it. I'm not sure who was more emotional as I drove away and he said "Bye Doll".

He made a pair of signs since plenty of people didn't know what it was.

Now at the shop....

Dan driving it in (3rd generation for this shop).

He drove it up on the hoist.

All the oil pan bolts were wet, so it will be getting a new oil pan gasket. If that is all that was leaking actively, I'll be happy.

There were a number of spare parts included with the car, including a set of hub caps and a grill / hood ornament. I did see some damage on the driver's side...otherwise the pieces are decent, although not as nice as the ones on the car.

So, the car is at the shop for a Manitoba vehicle inspection. It has to pass this to get a regular license. Overall, it looks good, but there is a body mount on the passenger side that is somewhat rusted (near the front sort of underneath the door pillar). A new one may need to be fabricated before they can sign off on the inspection.

The car is as yet unnamed. I haven't discussed with the Boss, so nothing is final until she has her say. I've thought of Franklin as that's the surname of the gentleman I purchased her from...not sure if I like a male name on the car though. Doll would be another. I guess we'll see.

It was a really nice drive to get it to the shop. I didn't turn the radio on as I didn't want to be distracted. I made a bit of noise a couple times when I attempted to downshift...after that I gave up and just used the clutch and brake...I'll learn the car's habits over time. The brakes were pulling a bit to the left. Otherwise it was nice. The steering wheel has a couple cracks, but is in decent shape overall.

Just don't ask me to wipe off the grin that is currently on my face...I didn't plan to buy a car this year, honest.

Derek,
I don't intend to demean your other cars, but I think this is my favorite, yet.

I love it when a plan comes together with another prewar car added to Derek's fleet!

Looks even better in your photos.

When do I get my ride?

Lamar,

You seem to be stuck in 1954.

I agree that you should check out the prewar forum more often & maybe find yourself a real time machine!

Thanks gang...I really like this set of photos - it made the car look good.

This car definitely has its share of flaws, particularly in the paint, but it is good enough to drive for a couple of years anyway before worrying about dressing it up too much.

Mark, when are you heading up this way? I have to get it licensed first, but after that...I could even take you to that museum in Elkhorn, about 3 hours from here.

On the off chance anyone is interested, I have just completed updating my personal Buick page to include this car. The photos linked are all in this thread, but there is a bit more verbiage. Enjoy!

Wow!!! They just don't come along everyday, and in that nice a condition.

Great find. And you know what, Cheers to the man you bought it from. He obviously had great love for the car, even so much as to let it go to a person who will cherish it as much as he did.

Kudo's to you both..

What is neat about your variety of Buick rides is that if all completed you will have a nice cross section of Buick cars driving experiences from the 20's to the 60's. That has always been my goal -to get a better appreciation of technology and powertrain changes from the different years. You can just tell the difference in the 29 McLaughlin to the 41 Special, then the 56 to the 66 and so on. If all completed, you could experience 50 plus years of Buick driving experiences in one weekend!

Jake - that is one huge if We're slowly making progress, so it may be a possibility one day. Another way of thinking about it is that in a number of years the kids are going to start driving - we'd be able to turn any ordinary car show into a spectacle with our bevy of Buicks

JohnD - I hear you. I'm not entirely how much of the decision to sell was his or his family's. He is starting to experience some memory loss. He had a '41 in his youth, which is why he went looking for this one. When we first visited, a few things did click - having some common acquaintances, enjoying fishing, and being Christian. I think that and the kids enjoying the car led to their decision to allow us to be the next stewards of the car.

Overall, we are very pleased. Regardless of what price guides may say, I'm coming to the realization that this was probably our best buy in terms of the deal that was struck.

Suzanne is leaning toward calling the car "Doll".

That looks like a good one to bring to Seattle. Good job on aquiring another member of the family.

Unless something happens to force the Wildcat not to make it (already registered for 400 point), it wouldn't be happening. Of course, that would probably force me to bring the truck and trailer the car, which, considering I don't own a trailer, would be difficult.

I got the word on the safety inspection today...as per usual, it is primarily brake work - rear shoes, wheel cylinders (leaking), and axle seals. That'll cost a few dollars, but it will be well worth it. Parts are on order, so in about a week, I should be happily driving it around.

Derek, I'll chime in here to say that this looks like a great car! The '41 Buicks are beautiful, and I think you made a great purchase here. I think you're going to have a blast with this grand old doll.

Thanks for sharing, and now I'm headed straight to the pre-war forum to learn more about it.

Well, she came home today. The price of the repairs was a chunk more expensive than estimated, but replacing the axle seals was considerably more involved than had been anticipated.

Once I got home, I just had to pull the camera out and take a few more photos.

The previous owner had replaced the trunk mat, but couldn't locate original material...that's something I'll change in due course.

The rear seat.

Now, the guy attractor...the hood opens...both ways.

The oil pressure (it was changed as part of replacing the oil pan gasket) was a bit low...I checked it after parking it - oil level seemed OK, although perhaps a bit on the low side of OK. I'll have to keep an eye on that as it was OK before then. It also ran relatively well today with 30* C (86 F) and a Humidex of 40* (104 F).

oh!, that is so nice.
Let me know how you are making out with the parking arrangements. I can find you an extra spot for the summer and into the fall if needed.
Maybe we can work a deal,!?!! as I may need a truck that can carry a nice new dynaflow and rear end from ND to wpg later in the fall. Nothing like a parts expedition!

I don't know yet...I'm a bit concerned about the oil pressure - if the gauge is correct, I'd like to rectify that before taking that sort of a trip, although it would be a good way to introduce it to the local club. Suzanne is on call, so can't leave town this weekend...we'll see how it goes.

I think we'll be OK for parking until the snow flies...if the Wildcat ever comes home, I can park Max on the street until one of the cars goes into storage...still have to move the '56 and bring the '29 home...sigh.

I'm not sure how this will work, but we got a new camera and I took a bit of video...the car isn't moving, but you should get a chance to hear it idle.
