My sunroof finally failed. It will open and close properly if only moved about 3 inches back. Much more than that and it jams with the driver's side moving further back than the passenger's side. The motor then makes sounds as if though gears are miss-meshing. It then needs a fair amount of manual help to realign and get closed properly.
....4 hours later.
I now understand what is going on. The right hand spring-like flexible screw gear cable which drags the sunroof back and forth is distorted such that the gear on drive motor does not properly engage. The motor gear also shows some wear. I can also see why it costs so much to repair. This is a MAJOR disassembly job to r&r the sunroof module to replace that cable.
I suggest those of you with sunroofs lubricate the cable track frequently with penetrating oil and then light oil to help prevent the build up of sludge dirt which increases drag and probably caused my failure.
I guess I'll through money at my Buick dealer until he yells "enough!"

[This message has been edited by Walter Light (edited 07-04-2000).]
