Smartin,

Today is the last day of racing at my local drag strip. I felt The Electra GSX was mighty slow at 14.35 and there were lots of good reasons for that as I mentioned. She should do 12s with the right suspension, tires, etc., etc.

I guess it is our nature to not be satisfied! Good luck breaking into the 14's next year.

It would be awsome to see that Centurion at 14.85!

Hello all,

I went to the US41 Dragway track in Morocco, IN again this year on 10/1/05.

However, by then, my 34,000 mile '71 Electra 225 Custom 2DHT and my 19,000 mile original 1960 Cadillac Series 62 Six-Window Hardtop had just been sold and shipped to a buyer in Sweden. So I could not run either of those.

And my daily driver LT1 '94 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (I was going to race) was totaled while parked in front of my house 5 days before the race by a guy with no isurance driving on a suspended licence.

So, I took the fully loaded 2001 Regal GS I had just bought (the day before my car got totaled) for my wife instead.

It did better than I thought it would.

It has the 240 HP Supercharged 3.8L V6, 2.93 transaxel ratio, 225 60R16 tire, and traction control.

I made 7 runs.

Here is my best run @ 75 F. This was achieved by leaving the automatic gear shift in 2nd gear for the whole 1/4 mile. It would start out in 1st, but hold it in 2nd through the traps.

If I started in 1st, it would upshift early at 4700 rpm instead of the 5800-5900 it normally does.

If I left it in 3rd or OD, it would upshift to 3rd 50-100 feet prior to the end of the 1/4 mile and slow the ET down by 0.150-0.200 seconds:

0.612 RT
2.224 60'
6.297 330'
9.078 ET @ 594'
9.700 1/8 mile ET
72.33 1/8 mile mph
12.617 1000'
15.074 1/4 mile ET
91.65 1/4 mile mph

My best 60' time was 2.199 sec on a different run.

I thought 15.074 sec was very good for a grocery getter sedan.

David

Here's a picture of me right before I waxed that 400-4 Banana right next to me, it wasn't even close, about a 1/2 second...but he had a nice view of my tail lights the whole time!

That's how to "find a ride." You just drive whatever is running at the time! An interesting and enlightening test of newer iron. I often think of this when driving around in my "hot" 89 IROC with stock 5.7 liter TPI V8: "Most of these ordinary newer cars can probably beat me." I got a firsthand experience getting my clock cleaned in a little freeway grand prix with a newer Nissan. He showed me his tail-lights all right. I soothed my ego by thinking I should've kept it out of OD. Yeah, that would have worked. I still think I looked better though.

Hi Guy,

Yes, we have gone to a period in time when every car is fast.

I remember the 80's when every car was slow, according to magazines, a new '82 Covette ran a 17.0 sec 1/4 mile.

(As per Jan. '06 Motor Trend.)

The new Hundai flagship, the Azera (replaces the XG350) with a 265 HP 3.8L V6 runs a 15.0 sec 1/4 @ 94.9 mph.

A Toyota Avalon 268 HP 3.5L V6 runs a 14.8 sec 1/4 @ 96.7 mph.

And the new Passat 280 HP 3.6L V6 runs a 14.4 sec 1/4 @ 100.6 mph.

Damn fast for V6 4 door sedans.

With one hour to go, this mild custom. Just paint, interior, and large diameter wheels, and $16,000! Well...there you go! There is another plain stock Riv in perhaps as good or better mechanical shape, needing paint and fancy wheels struggling to get $1,500?

I just sold that car, it's going to Germany. I'll have another 1971 Centurion at the BPG national meet next year, and it will be running 13's with any luck...and it will be stock appearing. A little port work on the heads and intake, a small cam, posi, slicks, and I'll be in business! Oh, can't forget 2.5" dual exhaust, small body HEI ignition, and a John Osborne prepped Qjet...

I'm pumped!!!

I understand.

So do you miss having a convertible? Or do you like the hardtop?

Also, what were the reasons to sell the other and buy this one?

I love the hardtop!

Many reasons for selling the vert. I got really tired of dealing with the scissor top.

The hardtop is much more untouched and I have a better car to work with when I want to enter any of the national shows.

And this car is lighter than the convertible <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I didn't see how to retrive the option list, but she sounds like a beautiful car. Personally, I like the lines of most 2DHT's to the convertibles, especially in the late 50's to the early 70's.

Smartin,

I like the photo with the red stripe tires. It really brings out the "Muscle Car" look in the Centurion. These cars have been largely overlooked as viable performance platforms. You have almost single handedly changed that perception, at least in my eyes. Getting deep into the 14s will be a lasting testimony to the car's capability.

God Speed,

Hey Adam,

That is one gorgeous interior! You can't beat black. Looks like all the dash chrome and wood is extremely nice. I can see why you had to have this one.
