Can anyone out there tell me the correct material to use for the carpet on my 1950 Chrysler Imperial Deluxe?? It is brown with black leather binding and appears to be ribbed. The hogshair carpet, some say is correct, does not match what is in the car. The same material is used on the kick panels in the front and on the lower portion of the door panels. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey, Baron:

Long time, no talk-to. I've been wondering what you've been up to.

I'll be visiting a friend of mine tomorrow (Sunday), and I'll take a close look at the carpeting in his '49 Imperial sedan. It's not the same year as yours obviously, but it still might tell us something. I don't know the correct terms for carpeting materials, but I'll try to describe it to you as best I can.

Thanks Jon,
Nice to hear from you as well <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Here is hoping that they used the same in the 1949, which is a much rarer version since they made so few of them. If he has had his replaced I would like to know where he purchased the material and if it matched the original or was a close substitute.

Thanks for your time and effort!!

Baron:

The good news is that his Imperial is a 1950, not a '49 like I thought, but the bad news is that it's been reupholstered nicely but not originally in terms of material.

More good news is that his 1950 Chrysler New Yorker is a perfect orginal with only 28,000 mniles and all its original materials. It's light green with a green interior, and if I remember right, your Imperial is green, too.

The carpeting looked like this: It had very fine lines in it, almost like cordorey, but the lines are very thin. Sticking out of those lines are very fine spikes of pile. Under great magnigication, it would look like Astroturf. The pile does not look like loops of yarn like later 1960s automotive carpeting, but rather, it looks and feels like very fine, short brush bristles. the fine lines in the carpeting were probably not visible when it was new.

I'm sure there's a name for this fabric, and I just don't know it. Run my description by an upholsterer, and I'm sure he'll tell you what it's called.

Jon,

That describes it to perfection, the problem is that I took the car to my upholsterer and he was unable to come up with any matches...nothing even remotely close...he suggested Hirsch in NJ. So I called him and he had nothing that came close. He wanted me to send a sample, which I will do if I cannot find it. Thats why I posted the question, to see if anybody might know another source for the carpet.

As always Jon, you are a ready source of help and info and it is MUCH appreciated!! Thanks for making the effort with your friend as well:)

The name of the type of carpet you have is called
Quote:
Hogshair
and was used on virtually all mopar vehicles from 1946 till 1954. I have a 1953 Chrysler Windsor that has this type of carpet, as did my Dad's 1949 Plymouth and his 1953 Chrysler that I learned how to drive on back in l958.
