Hello and Thanx for all your help, Has anybody switched over to insert rod bearings? Do the rod bearings take more punishment than the mains? I'm guessing I'm gonna switch over to insert rod bearings, would appreciate any help. I know I'm always asking questions of you guys, I'll try to slow down on my posts, Thanx Arthur

Doug,
Sorry I have not been any help on this one. But please don't stop asking the questions. The rest of may need the info you are seeking now. You are smart to post your questions in both spots.

Hello Chris, Thanx for all your help! You've been sorting out my problems from the start, Greatly Appreciated. I can get just the one rod re-babbitted, the guy said he does it all the time. If one bearings bad are they all? I'm learning alot about old machines. I just got a book "Everyman's Automobile Repair Manual" 1930, It has some info on Chandler, a cut-away view of the Traffic transmission and more. I would be happy to scan any pages for your help. Thanx again

Doug,

I have had two old Buicks that needed new bearings. I went back with Babbit and have had no problems. You mentioned on another thread that you had contacted Vintage Engine Machine - - is that in Ft. Collins, Colorado? If it is - - don't worry, he did my Buicks and he is very good.

Dan

Doug,
It looks like you are in real good hands with your question. I wonder what position your crank was in all those years of storage. That failed bearing may have been one that was dried out due to lack of lubrication. What oil did you wind up choosing to in the engine?
Thanks for the offer on the scanned images I would love them.
Another good reference book from the period is "Everyman's Guide to Motor Efficiency" by H.W. Slauson M.E. and Howard Greene.

Thanx again for all your help. I worked all day and have the rod on the workbench. Zig Billus at The Babbitt Pot said send it on. I talked to him for a while, he said if the other rods are'nt loose they're probably OK. It's a hard call, but the car's really gonna sit most of the time. He said could last 10 years, could last 10 minutes. He said babbitt being so soft, you get a little warning when it's failing. I think that rod was bad from the start, It had a hollow sound. I know now what a rod bearing going out sounds like. I'll re-inspect tomorrow, when fresh, and try to make the call. Thanx for all your support, Doug Arthur
