My 36 stock flathead v-8 burns up the points.Isn't there supposed to be a resistor behind the dash to prevent this? - How many volts are supposed to go to the distributor? Thanks, Gerry Guidry

There is an ignition resistor listed for Fords from 32 to 48. In my experiece the voltage drop is about to 2 volts. At www.macsautoparts.com they list the resistor part # V12250A for $1.90. I also have a 36 Ford V-8. If you would like me to measure the voltage or trace the wire back to find the resistor, let me know.

I wondered if you sorted out your problem, the capacitor in the didtributor is the thing that reduces the arcing at the points, The voltage is not so important although it would eventually overwork and overheat the coil. But check there is a good ground between the didtributor and the block AND from the block to the chassis/battery.

Dear Ford Enthusiasts,
Thanks for your Info. regarding my 36 V-8 burning the points. The previous owner, a man of great knowledge, had bypassed the resistor. I now have a little over four volts to the distributor. thanks again.
Gerry Guidry
