Desmc14
Dad had a 1965 Riv which has not been run or started for likely 10 years - took it into a mechanic - he lubed engine and replaced points etc. before starting - runs smooth and quiet except for cylinder #6 which has very low compression and won't fire .... he thinks it's a valve related problem. Only 60,000 miles soriginal - solid car - Any ideas regarding the valves? Also, it needs a new gas tank. Any ideas where I can find one? Thanks! harry yarnell
A simple leakdown test should pinpoint the low compression. A decent mechanic should know that.
Desmc14
Okay thanks. I am not mechanically inclined, so I will ask him. He did mention that he did a few things, but I don't kow what it means. Basically the valves are closed and there is still very low compression on cylinder #6. He feels it is a burnt valve. Others have told me to put some dtergent oil in and drive it for 100 miles to see if it frees it up. The other 7 cylinders are 125-140, so they're good. It's been sitting for so long, I'm looking for some guidance. Thanks!
Mr Riviera
Drive the car for a while - you can always fix it and it may fix itself.
Jim Cannon
I agree with Dick. Perhaps pour a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank to lube the valve stem while you drive.
