Guest r_rod
My shoulder belt retractor is fully extended and will not retract. Does it need to be replaced?
Guest TommyH
remove the pannel that covers it, and see if its jammed? does it have any motion in it at all? does it pull out less than the passenger side? did you make a sudden stop before it froze? Roadster90
Hello, and WELCOME to the REATTA FORUM ....(the absolute best automotive forum on the net) . You will find that you will become very comfortable here with a great bunch of folks that will offer their unselfish help and advice with your Reatta.....some of the best technical minds camp out here . With your seat belt problem >>> same thing happened to my drivers belt about a year ago...disturbed me as I couldn't figure it out...was working fine one moment and the next moment...fooooey. I called Jim Finn for some help and he told me most likely there was a dirt granual or something of that nature apparently lodged in the mechanism, and to "work or excercise" the belt a little to dis lodge the dirt "whatever". I did and there was no immediate relief, but after a day it cured itself. Someone else might chime in with a better or more technical remedy, but just working the belt for a day or so worked for me...and it was very labor & cost effective .... good luck and again welcome!
Guest r_rod
That was quick. There is roughly 1/4" of motion. It is actually my son's car. He said he just tried to make an adjustment and it would not retract. I had already pulled the cover off to check it out. The belt is fully 100 % extended, you can't pull anymore belt off the roller. Why he had that much belt out I do not know. I tried pulling and releasing several times to no avail. The lever below the roller looks like it is released, not set against the teeth. Maybe it is dirt. I'll have to pull the quarter upper panel off to get a better look.
Barney Eaton
If the retractor does not move when the pawl is released, then you may have a broken spring. That would be a very unusual problem. You might be able to rebuild it using a similar part, but the simplest solution is to contact Jim Finn at jfinn@cpinternet.com and he can probably furnish a good belt assembly in your interior color. manikmekanik
Is the car facing downhill? The gravity-activatd catch may free-up easier if the car is facing uphill.

Guest r_rod
Ok, I figured it out. There is a red cover that says DO NOT REMOVE. So I didn't. In playing with it, I noticed that on the opposite side of the red cover, there is a black... not quit a gear that sits between the retractor frame and the roller that has teeth at both ends. Its damaged and is binding. If you know what I am talking about, can this be repaired, or should I contact Jim Finn?
charlie1
How about some old WD-40.
Guest r_rod
It's physical damage. The black piece is broken. I either find a way to glue it, or replace it, though glueing probably isn't the brightest idea.
Guest r_rod
Regarding what I found, I've attached a jpg file if anyone can look at it and tell me what the arm is and if it would not be safe to leave impaired. The arm is located under the black cover, not the one which is not to be tampered with. As I stated in an earlier post, the pin that is attached to the arm rides in a network of channels as the seatbelt is extended or retracted. If there is no attachment, I blew it. DAVES89
I would'nt try fixing a seatbelt. It is there foe the one time you may need it. You will never know if your repairs will work until that one time. That belt is common to more then one car. I would either get one from Jim if he has it or try asalvage yard. Just my 2 cents. Guest TommyH
i too would not try to fix the belt. i think they used those on silverado's blazer, sierra, all thos big kinda trucks n such. and smaller cars too. just look for one from the same era. thats my 5 cents
Guest r_rod
Thanks for the 2 cents and the 5 cents. This is why I asked first. The part does not seem important to me, but you never know. Anyway, I contacted Jim Finn, and he has a harness, so thats the route I am taking. Thanks to every else that responded as well.
SarinaCope
There are many reasons to extended your seat belt. The first one is a belt loop, and another is a retractor. In this situation, you need to clean your retractor and set a loop in it. After doing this, it's not working; then you need to change your belt retractor. padgett
Usually it is a crease in the belt that jams the retractor
